Classroom Clippings

Year Five

In September, once again we look forward to the St Francis Xavier Visual Art Show. Our art show is a wonderful time for students to showcase their learning of different art skills and experiences of using different or new mediums. This year the Year 5’s have set out to try something new with the intention of exhibiting some 3D art work in the show.

After a visit from an Abroiginal Art teacher for NAIDOC Week, the students were exposed to basket weaving in a similar way to that of Aboriginall people. Most of us in Year 5 have now learnt how to weave a basket using, raffia, paper raffia, string or rope. Learning to weave has tested our patience to learn a new skill and many students should be congratulated on their ability to teach others this skill.

Weaving, we have found, can be quite relaxing and very addictive. Every morning the students cannot wait enter the classroom, which currently resembles a farmyard barn, to continue weaving. It has been great to see all students keen to try this new activity; demonstrating resilience, perseverance and determination.

Other art pieces we will be exhibiting include surreal portraits, cityscapes and still life portraits. The students have been focusing on various elements of art, with a particular focus this year on learning how to blend colours using chalk and oil pastels.

Year One and Two Excursion

The Year One/Two Level recently had an amazing excursion to Scienceworks. We saw many amazing things, conducted some awesome experiments and learnt a lot. Highlights include Alex in 1MH having her hair rise with static electricity, the Lightning Show, watching Tycho To The Moon on the roof in the Planetarium and racing Olympic athletes in the General Admission area. Here are some samples of work and photos from the day.
