Year 7 Girls Hockey winners
A very busy 2017 of sport has now come to an end. The most pleasing aspect has been the level of student participation at Interschool competitions. Along with record participation rates, Footscray City has also enjoyed success in a wide variety of sports. Teams to progress to Western Metropolitan Region finals after winning our local competition this year included:
Two of these teams – Year 7 Girls Hockey and Year 8 Boys Table Tennis were successful at the WMR finals and went on to the State finals. Also, congratulations to all students who have represented the school, on their behaviour & sportsmanship displayed. It has been really pleasing to witness the spirit & goodwill shown throughout these competitions.
Apart from the team highlights, I would like to acknowledge some individual 2017 sport awards:
Swimmers of the Year: Caitlin Holland and Kingston Keen
Athletes of the Year: Jada Kyle and Brody Vorano
Sportspersons of the Year: Hayley Cassidy and Brody Vorano
These students will be forever remembered as their names will now go on to the FCC Sport Honour Boards.
Another outstanding individual effort was Makayla Hudson (Year 7) winning all her qualifying events including the State Athletics finals in the 13 year old girls Discus event. She also went on to represent her state at the National titles in December in Adelaide. A fantastic effort.
As well as Interschool competition, there have been weekly timetabled Sport Education classes for all Years 7, 8 and 9 students and our hugely successful Year 7, 8 & 9 Swimming & Athletics carnivals this year. This was only the second year students competed in houses at these carnivals and I am hoping the ‘house spirit’ will continue to grow in 2018. Apart from the traditional sports mentioned above, Sport Education classes in Personal Fitness, Self-Defence, Skateboarding, European Handball, Dance & Lawn Bowls have been running in various Terms. Hopefully, the platforms gained by our students through the FCC Sport program will be the launching pad of a fit and healthy lifestyle for many years to come.
Finally, many thanks to the staff that have volunteered to coach our teams both at sport days and after school. It has been a pleasure overseeing our students as they develop their skills and tackle the challenges that are presented on the sporting arena. I would like to thank the FCC staff members who put in a lot of time and effort to train and coach our teams to perform to the best of their ability and in the right spirit of sportsmanship.
