8D STEAM ACTIVITY

HOW DO YOU TURN A SCIENCE EXPERIMENT INTO A WORK OF ART?

This term 8D Visual Arts students participated in a newly devised STEAM Activity. Adrienne and Peter collaborated to support the class to explore their understanding of Chemicals and Science inquiry as a source of inspiration to produce artworks for the recent Footscray City College Art Exhibition. Through investigating the mixing of salt and water to change the density of liquids, students made aesthetic connections between the outcome of the experiment and colour field artworks by American artist Mark Rothko. Students reflected on their previously learnt colour theory and observed how the dye indicated the varied densities of their salt and water mixtures. In capturing the science experiment outcome, each group of students used oil pastels to mirror the American artist's techniques and arranged the observed colors into mini colourfield compositions. When each student's individual response to the experiment was arranged together a stunning display of colour and pattern was proudly displayed.
