Defence Force Technical Trades Tour (part 2)
Last ‘Newslink’ I mentioned that I had the good fortune to participate in a Defence Force Recruiting tour of recruit training facilities at Wagga Air Base, Kapooka Army Base (Wagga), Bandiana Army Base (Wodonga) and HMAS Cerebus Naval Base (Flinders). With me were 30 potential recruits and career practitioners from Victoria, NSW, Qld & SA. The focus was on recruitment opportunities in Science Technical Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) focused roles.
At Bandiana, the Army Base (near Wodonga) where most of the technical trainees undergo their training, we saw mechanical trade opportunities associated with vehicle building and maintenance as well as engineering trades and construction trades. A highlight was seeing the Bushmaster troop carrier as well as the workshops with all the trades in action. ‘Team Army’ showcases the talents of the mechanical trades at V8 Supercar events around the country. Trainees build new vehicles that tour with the V8’s.
Bandiana
Bandiana also holds the Army Medical School where Medics are trained. We were shown a field simulation facility, a very large shed where elements (like rain, light and wind) can be controlled to simulate conditions medics can expect to experience in the field. We also saw Medics in action in emergency theatre simulations.
HMAS Cerebus
At HMAS Cerebus, the Navy recruit training base as well as the trade training facility for electronic and mechanical trades you couldn’t help but be impressed. The technology on display, both military and training tools, was amazing. Engineers (fitters) hone their welding skills with $250,000 computer simulators that analyse every chemical and mechanical aspect of their welds in combination with the usual training you’d expect in any state of the art engineering workshop. We saw electronic systems technician training in both communication and artillery. A highlight was being shown Helicopter launched anti-submarine torpedoes and the arming and launching of a basketball out of one of these torpedo tubes.
Navy Recruits
Navy recruits undergo the same rigorous physical and military training of the other services. As one recruit told me, the first 2 weeks were the most challenging time of her life thus far, both physically and mentally. However, she was quick to say that the other recruits soon became family and you all get each other through. We got to see the shared accommodation, physical training, military training and the daily parade and march past the Base’s Commanding Officer.
Firefighting
Of particular interest to me was learning that fire is such an ever-present danger on ships, it’s a seaman’s greatest fear. As such an important part of recruit training is in the role of firefighter. We observed the team response of recruits to a simulated fire on a ship as well as shoring and sealing penetrations to the hull that would otherwise sink the ship. Every move by individuals and the team is monitored and coached to perfection so that should an emergency occur each crew member can play their role.
University Access programs
La Trobe University = the ‘Aspire’ program
- Year 12: Applications for the La Trobe University Aspire Early Admissions program have already opened for current Year 12 students who plan to study at La Trobe in 2018 or 2019. Aspire is an access program for those of you who are engaged in leadership and community service through school and/or in the community. It could be through a volunteer organisation like the CFA, Search & Rescue, St Vinnies, Scouts or many others. Alternatively you may play a leadership role in your sporting community or within the school community. See the link for details
- Years 9 – 11: If you are engaged in leadership and community service through school and/or in the community you are eligible to apply for the La Trobe University Aspire Generation program. Successful applicants will be supported to participate in a range of volunteer and leadership opportunities hosted by La Trobe in conjunction with various community organisations.

ACU’s – Early Achiever Program (EAP)
Build on your volunteering and leadership experience and explore your potential with ACU’s Early Achievers’ Program. If you regularly volunteer in your community – through your school, community organisation, or cultural or religious group – you could be eligible for the Early Achievers’ Program entry into an undergraduate degree.
If successful, you’ll receive an offer as early as August to study, and benefit from opportunities to enhance your leadership and volunteering skills while at ACU.
You can apply if you are currently in Year 12, if you are a non-recent school leaver (such as a mature-age student). Both domestic and international students can apply if you hope to enroll in a course at ACU.

UNE – Early Entry Program (University of New England – NSW)
An ATAR or OP score is not the only measure of your ability to succeed at university. That’s why UNE has an ‘early entry’ program. UNE’s Early Entry recognises that your story is not best told by a number and ensures that you have the best opportunity to go to university.
UNE Early Entry is open to all year 12 applicants and relies solely on your school’s assessment of your attributes and abilities to determine your suitability for entry. The assessment is based around your ability to work and learn independently, as well as your overall potential for academic success at UNE.
Because UNE doesn’t need to wait to receive your ATAR or OP score, you can apply to UNE early, receive an offer and secure a place at university, even before scores are released. This gives you the certainty you need to begin making other arrangements such as where to live and finding part-time work to get ahead of the pack.

University and other institution Open Days – mark them in your diary now!
Open Days are held at most Universities in school Term 3 - but what are Open Days all about? Which ones should you and your child go to and what will you do when you get there?
What is an Open Day?
On Open Day, a university opens its doors to anyone who is interested in attending their university in the future, or who would just like to know more about the institution. University Open Days are well worth attending for all Year 10-12’s because they can help you make one of life's important decisions. They usually occur on weekends during Term 3 of the school year. They are held at institutions across the country. Some of our students do choose to go to interstate to study in places like Canberra, Sydney, the Gold Coast, Adelaide and in Tasmania because the courses they are interested in may be more accessible to them or because they are seeking to move.
When and where are open days held?
Some universities have multiple campuses with Open Days on different dates at their regional or smaller campuses.
Attached is a link to a calendar of the Open Day’s with links to institutions.
