CHANGES TO FEEDBACK GIVEN ON ASSESSMENT TASKS - SEMESTER 2

Until now, most specific, individual feedback given to students about English appeared on the final submission of their assessment task. As a result, students had limited opportunity to respond to the feedback given. Because the final submission feedback also appeared alongside a mark or grade, students often interpreted it as a justification for receiving the mark rather than a suggestion about how to improve. This interpretation often affected the ways in which students attribute their successes and failures, and subsequently affected their motivation in English.

For these reasons, the English Department will amend our processes for giving feedback on summative assessment tasks in the second semester of this year. Specific, individual feedback will only be applied to draft submissions of tasks. The usual rules regarding the submission of drafts will apply.

Final submissions will have a mark and a detailed rubric to indicate the extent to which students have demonstrated knowledge and skills on their submission. Markers will also share feedback about the whole cohort with common areas for improvement and samples of student work that demonstrate how specific criteria were met. Time will be allocated in class for students to apply these observations to their work.

Please encourage your son/daughter to submit drafts of their assessment tasks to receive timely feedback that can be acted upon to improve their performance.
