MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

Mr Alister Hill

Middle Sub-School Leader

Firstly, I would like to start by congratulating Rebecca and Jayden Durran on the safe arrival of Finley Lucas Durran.  Rebecca leaves the Middle School to approach the next chapter in her life. She has been a fantastic leader of this team and I know all staff and students have appreciated the compassion, energy and organisation she has brought to the College. We hope that she will be back soon, but wish her luck with all the milestones ahead.

It is with much enthusiasm that I start the role as the Middle Sub-School Leader. I have worked with many of the Year 9 and 10 students through the SRC and previously as SEAL Coordinator and Transition Assistant. I look forward to continuing this work through the SRC, but also getting the opportunity to make many more positive changes with all the students from the middle school.

Transition back to face to face learning

Congratulations to all the Year 9 and 10 students and families for making such a smooth transition back to face to face learning. I understand for some students this would have been a challenging transition and busy with the end of semester summative task. Already, it feels as though we are back into our routines and before long, the term will be over. I would also like to thank all the students who demonstrated patience as we finalised the layout for the re-developed locker bay area. This space now provides students with a huge concrete and undercover area. If students have any ideas on how we can best utilise this space then please speak to your Year Level Captains or Coordinators. All students should now have been allocated a new locker and school supplied lock. Please speak to your Coordinators if this is not the case.

Some students may be finding it difficult transitioning back to onsite learning. Please be assured that it is OK if you are struggling. Below are some basic tips on how to look after yourself, taken from Dr. Michael Carr-Gregg, one of Australia's highest profile psychologists and mental health advocates.

  • Be mindful of exposure to information through traditional and social media. Take a break from the 24-hour news cycle.
  • Do things that make you feel physically and emotionally safe, and be with those who are helpful to your wellbeing.
  • Engage in activities that promote a sense of calm and feeling grounded (use of alcohol and other drugs can be counterproductive with this).
  • Eat well, stay active and get enough sleep.
  • It can help to talk with a trusted adult if it all feels a bit much.

New semester timetable

We now move into Semester Two which means students have some changes to their timetables and elective subjects. This is an excellent opportunity to experience a breadth of subjects across the College and help you narrow down your pathway selections prior to senior schooling. If for some reason you need to change an elective subject you need to speak to your Year Level Coordinators prior to the end of this term. Changes will not be made after the school holidays. More information on the subject requirements and curriculum options can be found on the college website.
