SEAL (Select Entry Accelerated Learning) and Scholarships

On Wednesday, 3 June, we conducted our SEAL testing at the College.  Due to Covid-19 it was felt that we could conduct this testing prior to the Grade 6 students returning to school.  The students participated in an online comprehension, numeracy and general ability test, along with a written creative thinking and extending writing task. We are still in the process of vetting the results and references in order to decide the makeup of the 2021 SEAL class.

During the following Thursday and Friday, Stan Koullas and Julie Andrews conducted the scholarship interviews. Most students, although a little shy to begin with, confidently spoke about their learning and extra curricular successes.  We look forward to announcing the successful scholarships soon.

Return to face to face teaching

It has been pleasing to see the smooth transition that students have made on their return to school.  Tuesday saw many smiling students with a level of interaction greater than what is seen upon a return from school holidays.  There has been a noticeable change in hair length on many of the boys, particularly at the back.

Walking around the college students have been visibly engaged in their lesson and participating in their summative tasks.

The Year 9 and 10 students are appreciating the extra space in their locker areas and Mr McDougall and Mr Grozdanovski have done an amazing job in leading the smooth transition of this change.  The student leaders will now have input on how to best use the covered area in the old locker bay.

Attendance across all year levels has been around 90% with only a couple of students choosing not to return due to Covid 19. There have been little issues with uniform with only some facial hair that was required to be removed that night.

Semester 2 begins this week and it is a chance for students to settle into some new subjects and teachers. It brings the opportunity to refresh their learning

Reporting and assessment

Due to the remote and flexible learning in Term 2 and the impact on assessment and VCE studies, the college has adopted the following changes to the reporting cycles. Parent teacher conferences will be held on Tuesday, 28 July, 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Hopefully guidance around Parents being onsite is forthcoming from the Department sometime soon, but in the meantime we are planning for all kinds of scenarios. These are an important part of the College program and parents also highlighted the need for this as being important during Remote learning. Online booking will be used for either models.

Semester 1 reports are due to be published on the last day of Term 2.

Course counselling

Year 11 subject selections

The process for Year 11 students continuing to shape their pathway involves all students meeting with a course counsellor to:

  1. Check their subjects against their pathway
  2. Review their subjects
  3. VCE students will drop a subject

Students will do this during the school day and parents will not be required for this process. Instead, they will be encouraged to have conversations with their parents in the lead up to the course counselling day. All Year 11 students will go through this process on Tuesday, 21 July.

Year 10 subject selections for 2021

Year 10 students went through the Morrisbey survey and pathway consult last year and will therefore be in a great position to engage with this part of the program. The Careers week starts on Monday, 27 July, and takes shape differently due to the rules around COVID in schools at the moment. Hence, there will be numerous activities and remote links with external presenters throughout. We always experience improvements in this program and I believe that despite the situation we will enhance the program once again.

Important dates for parents and students during this week include:

28 July Parent Teacher Conferences (to be confirmed)

  • Compass bookings with parents
  • Discuss capacity and potential pathways
  • Learn about subjects for senior study

Subject selections held through booking on Compass

  • Thursday, 30 July from 1 pm to 6 pm
  • Friday,  31 July from 8 am to 3 pm

Parents to come in with their children to sign off on chosen subjects for 2021 (To be confirmed)

Year 9 subject selections for 2021

The Year 9 students will be selecting all their subjects based on our College guidelines which can be found on the NGSC website. Students will be pointed to observing these in the lead up to their subject selection day. Subject selections will be held in the same manner as the Year 10. Parents will need to book in times with the appropriate counsellor during the following times:

  • Thursday, 6 August, 1 pm to 6 pm
  • Friday, 7 August,  8 am to 3 pm

School camps and excursions

Information relating to sport, camps and excursions is due to come from the Department on Monday, 22 June.

REMINDER TO PARENTS/CARERS

Any students who suffer from Asthma, Allergies or Anaphylaxis are to provide the relevant Asthma Plan or an ASCIA Action Plan for either Allergic Reactions/Anaphylaxis completed by a Doctor. It is a requirement of the Department of Education that parents must provide the relevant plans (in colour) and that they are renewed every year. Also, if your child requires medication or an epipen, parents/carers are required to complete a “Medication in School” form and provide the relevant medication in its original box showing the expiry date.

Alternatively, in order to update our records, if we have previously been advised that your child suffers from any of the conditions listed above, and it’s considered they no longer suffer from the condition, we require a letter from your GP stating this.

These requirements are set out by the Department of Education and Training and if the relevant paperwork/medication are not provided it may result in your child not being allowed to attend external camps or excursions.

Happy Holidays

As this is the last newsletter for Term 2, we wish everyone a safe and restful holiday and look forward to seeing you refreshed and ready for Term 3 on Monday, 13 July, 2020.
