Year 8 News

Kylie Lambert

As the end of term winds up, I wanted to acknowledge and thank all of those people who have made this term a success for our learners.

Thanks firstly to all of the students who have shown great persistence and flexibility during the remote learning period. It definitely was not easy, but we had some excellent results and great learning throughout the term, despite working from home. There have been some Year 8 learners who have absolutely shone and should be congratulated for putting effort in, always turning up to video conferences, and submitting their learning tasks on time and to a high standard. I had the opportunity to call out their names during our remote assemblies. The following students were given either a postcard home, or a canteen voucher for excellent progress and application during the remote learning period:

It was great to see students extending themselves to the extra curricula activities such as the weekly challenges, the “Random Acts of Kindness” during Learning to Learn, and the athletics day.

Special thanks also to the parents for supporting their children at home. We know that you didn’t sign up to be teachers, motivators and counsellors, but you did a great effort in helping your child through this period. Thank-you.

I also wanted to thank the teachers for the huge amount of professional learning they have undergone these past few months. Many teachers spent their Easter break learning how to best teach remotely, and we know these coming holidays will be extra special.  My sincere thank-you also goes to the ES staff who have contacted each and every family in Year 8 for a good couple of months, keeping all of the students and teachers on track.

We look forward to things getting back to “normal” next term. Our Broadening Horizons program, or Collabor8, has been postponed until Term 4, to ensure we have the ability to connect with mentors and industry partners face to face. Next term, we will be solidifying our student leadership team and spending time getting feedback from students on how we can best improve the school. Term 3 is where we can focus on extending and challenging our students at their point of need. Next term there will be some small changes to student classes. Those students impacted will be notified over the next week.

If you have any questions related to the Year 8 program, please contact Kylie Lambert or Sue Clancy at the College.
