Online Parent/Guardian Information Sessions

Due to the ban on mass gatherings, our usual Maffra Secondary College Careers EXPO is not being held this year. However, we will still be holding an online parent/guardian information night, on Wednesday July 29th, for parents of students in Years 8, 9 and 10. These will be held using Microsoft Teams. It is crucial that all parents / guardians attend these information sessions with their child about what students can expect regarding their academic program for 2021 and the subject offerings that will be available. There will be opportunity for parents to ask questions and staff from our range of subject areas will be available for a Q and A after each session.

Year 8 2020

Students currently in Year 8 (and their parent/guardian) need to attend from 6pm-6:45pm. To do this open Microsoft Teams and log into the Team called ‘Year 8 Students 2020’. LaShay Tricker will present information about the academic program offered in 2021 for Year 9.

Year 9 2020

Students currently in Year 9 (and their parent/guardian) need to attend from 6:45pm-7:30pm. Open Microsoft Teams and log into the Team called ‘Year 9 Cohort’. Daniel Murphy will present information about the academic program offered in 2021 for Year 10.

Year 10 2020

Students currently in Year 10 (and their parent/guardian) need to attend from 7:30pm-8:15pm. Open Microsoft Teams and log into the Team called ‘Year 10 Students’. Sarah Whitwam / Marie Clark will present information about the VCE and VCAL academic programs offered in 2021.

Course Counselling and Subject Selection

Following the information night on July 29th, each student in Years 9, 10 and 11 will have an individual careers counselling session with Marie Clark, MSC’s qualified Careers Practitioner, to discuss their pathway, plans for the future, and possible subject selections that fit with this pathway, including consideration of prerequisite subjects. Students will complete a course selection form during this meeting to take with them to their subject selection meeting (see below). Parents/ guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend the careers counselling sessions with their child. Further information on how to book the sessions will be sent out soon.

Following the individual course counselling sessions, there will be a ‘Subject Selection Day’ held in the College Library on Friday August 14th, for students in Years 9 and 10 in 2020, and their families. On this day, each student and their parent/guardian will be allocated a time to come into the school and meet with the student’s Year Level Team Leader or Assistant Leader. At this meeting, the student’s selected subjects will be entered into the school’s online timetable system and payments for any high-cost electives will be payable on that day to secure the student’s place in the subject(s) (or a payment plan organised at that time). This is a compulsory meeting – all students and a parent / guardian must attend. There will also be another opportunity to ask questions of the school’s Careers Practitioner on that day.

In summary, this year, the course selection process will consist of:

1) Parent/guardian information sessions and Q &A (Wed 29th July)

2) Individual careers counselling session for each student (parents/guardians are welcome, booking will open soon, more info to come)

3) Subject selection day, Friday August 14th, in the school library – each family will be allocated a time to attend (parents/guardians must attend)
