Focus on Asthma

As we head into winter and cold/flu season approaches it is a timely reminder on the importance of Asthma Awareness and the need for a Victorian Schools Action plan.

Information from Asthma Australia

Asthma in young children is one of the most common causes of hospital admission and visits to the doctor. Having a child with asthma can be frightening for parents and carers, but with good knowledge and management, your child’s asthma can usually be well controlled.

Establishing the right behaviours, reflexes and resources early in the life of a child with asthma means they have the best change of continuing strong health behaviours as they grow into independence.

Asthma Australia produces Asthma Action Plans for Victorian Schools. These plans need to be filled in and signed by a doctor every 12 months. Many parents do give the school the action plan from their doctor which is very different from the Asthma Australia plan.

Doctor’s Action Plan

Provides information on what to do when a child has difficulty breathing or is having an Asthma Attack.

Victorian Schools Action Plan

Provides information on how to manage the child's asthma to avoid an asthma attack. It tells us the triggers, whether the child needs to premedicate before exercise. Signs of asthma including wheezing, coughing etc and how much medication they need. It also tells us if they can self administer and has their photo on it.

We as a school take Asthma very seriously and would like to ensure that the best practice is in place for your asthmatic child. It is the parents responsibility to provide a Victorian Schools Action plan every 12 months and it has to be signed by a doctor and to have a conversation with a First Aid Officer to discuss any further risks or management. It is also parents responsibility  to provide medications and spacers to manage their child’s care.

The school will endeavour to contact parents when the plan or medication needs to be renewed but it is your responsibility to manage.

CSPS Asthma Policy and the Victorian Schools Asthma Action Plan for use with puffer and spacer form is available on the schools website. If you print out a plan to take to your child’s doctor, please do so in colour. Alternatively you can share the link with your child’s doctor and they can fill it in online and print it for you. These plans are also available on the Asthma Australia website.
