Work Experience News
With only four weeks to go before Work Experience week, we are busy finalizing paperwork to allow us to distribute information packs to students and employers at the beginning of June. Students have been busy completing their Industry Module which covers OH&S specific to the Industry they will be working in, and students doing trades will also be completing their Construction Industry Induction Training in the coming week. Thank you to everyone who has returned their completed forms and a special thank you to Ms Katie Brennan who has been assisting students who have been struggling to find a placement.
Two Year 10 students have been fortunate to undertake special Work Experience placements in recent weeks. Lilly MacParland spent a week at the Bogong Outdoor Education School on Mt Bogong, assisting staff with visiting school groups. Lilly gained experience in various outdoor activities including orienteering, rock climbing, canoeing and high ropes courses and received glowing feedback from her employers. Jessie Lal was one of 14 students around Australia to be selected for a female only Flight Camp at RAAF Amberley in Queensland. The camp is run primarily to encourage women to join the Airforce, but more specifically to recruit them into non-traditional roles such as aircrew, engineering and technical positions. Jessie lived at the base for 4 days and undertook activities including flight simulators, a flight in a military aircraft and physical training. Jessie was interviewed about her experience at the camp by QUT News: http://www.qutnews.com/2015/05/14/camp-aims-to-get-more-women-into-defence-jobs/#.VVf9f_mqqkp
The Parents of the Year Award must go to Jessie’s parents who not only had to fly to Brisbane twice to deliver and collect Jessie from the base, but also spent many hours on the phone helping us work through the insurance red tape so this placement could go ahead.

French Host Families
2015 French Host Family Program Information and Expectations
The 10 French students will arrive at Tullamarine Airport on Wednesday evening 24 June at 20:55 (8:55pm). They depart on Monday 24 August.
The French students will be met at the airport by Frankston High School staff and transported to the school by bus for collection by their host families hosting the first rotation from 24 June. Their expected arrival time at the Junior School car park is 10:45pm. This will be confirmed by text to the first rotation host families. However, if you choose to pick up your French student from the airport, please email and let me know.
The emphasis of the program is to experience our culture, our food and our language so interacting as much as possible with a host family in English and eating your food at meal times is recommended.
We ask each host family to provide accommodation and 3 meals per day please (a cut lunch or lunch money for the canteen for school days). We also ask that you pay for your guest when dining out or an admission cost to a venue if the outing has been arranged by you, otherwise we expect the French student to fund anything additional during their stay.
Please ask your French student to help with daily chores in your home.
The French students will rest at your home on Thursday, 25 June before commencing orientation with Mrs Anne Thomson on Friday, 26 June. They can stay on their own or with a family member but if this presents a problem, please contact Mrs Thomson. Please take your French student to the Conference Room on the 7-10 Campus near the General Office at 9am on Friday, 26 June for Orientation. As it is the last day of Term 2, school finishes at 2:30pm instead of 3:15pm on this day.
The French students have been asked to pack a calculator and appropriate black tie up shoes to wear as school shoes. School information, uniform, student ID card, books and locker will be issued during Orientation.
Host families who are rostered for the last rotation are asked to please return loaned uniforms and books to the General Office soon after their departure. However, at the end of their stay, they will have an option to buy part of the school uniform as a momento.
The French students will commence scheduled classes on the first day of Term 3 and will be given their class timetable on this day. Please remind your French student to go to the Middle school Coordinators at 9am on the first day of Term 3 to collect their class timetable.
If any host brothers or sisters are in VCE classes and leave early on certain days, please email Mrs Thomson if you want her to organise an early leavers pass for your French student. Your French student will be timetabled for Year 10 classes but will also be timetabled for a Year 11 French class.
Please be aware that under no circumstances are any of the French students allowed to consume alcohol during their stay in Australia. Please refer to the Host Family Program Behavior Contract attached which we ask all French students to sight and sign.
Please note: If you haven’t applied for your Working with Children Check please do so immediately.
It is always a challenge to find enough families for the host family programs but it is a rewarding cultural experience and we really appreciate your offer to host a French student.
Please contact Ms Anne Thomson athomso@fhs.vic.edu.au or 0409 835 541 with any queries.
Over the school holidays please contact Mrs Judith Guzys-McAuliffe: 0400 268 066 or Mrs Bibi Grenade: 0418 327 341 with any queries.
Many thanks again.
