Staff in the Spotlight

With so many staff joining our team this year, we would like to give our school community the opportunity to get to know our new teachers in a fun way. Each week we will be spotlighting a new staff member and sharing with you all sorts of fun and interesting stories about who they are and most importantly, why they became a teacher and what they love most about teaching!

This week we are spotlighting Jamila Jamil-Lopez.

Jamila has joined our Inclusion Team and will be our full-time Inclusion Learning Support Coordinator, organising and delivering a range of small group Tier 2 Interventions for students requiring extra literacy and learning support.

How long have you been in Education?

I have been in Education Support for the past 7 years. Prior to that, I taught English and Portuguese as an additional language for 20 years.

What school/university or organisation have you come from?

Mooroolbark College.

Why did you decide to become involved in Education?

I'd like to pursue my Masters in Education as I have a passion for helping young students achieve the best of their abilities.

What do you love most about your job?

The ability to connect to students in a way that they believe they are capable of achieving, whatever they put their minds to.

What has been one of your best teaching moments?

I've had so many wonderful moments with students but mostly I feel accomplished when my students have a "light bulb" moment when they realise they are capable of completing a task that once seemed impossible!

What are three things you would like your students to know about you?

I'm caring, reliable and a great listener!

Where's your favourite holiday destination?

Anywhere with sun & sand ;-)

What TV show/series did you last binge watch?

Yellowstone

If you could wear Harry's invisibility cloak for one day, where would you go and what would you do?

I'd sit around my students at lunchtime and observe them around their friends and listen to their likes, dislikes, worries, hopes... and perhaps learn more about them so I can best help them and make sure they feel happy at school!!

What is the one piece of 'advice' or the one thing that you always say to your students?

Do not aim to be successful in life, aim to be a kind human being!
