International Women's Day

On Wednesday 8 March we celebrated International Women’s Day  at Wantirna College.

Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated.

Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all step forward and truly #EmbraceEquity.

International Women's Day aims to:

  • Raise awareness about discrimination/ gender inequalities in Australia and Globally
  • Celebrate women's achievements, and
  • Take action to drive gender equity

To mark the date, we organised a range of fun classroom and lunchtime activities. The day started with a morning tea for all staff in the main staffroom with Knox Mayor, Marcia Timmers-Leitch joining us and addressing the room.  Marcia honoured the women who have been role models in her life and also spoke about the importance of equity of opportunity for all our young people.

During Period 3, students from Years 7-12 completed an International Women’s Day Quiz competition, where they answered questions about the history of International Women's Day, general facts, recognising famous women and a tricky female teacher matching task.

At lunchtime our female staff challenged a competitive Year 9 and 10 girls’ team in an exciting netball game umpired by none other than our Principal, Mr Kevin Murphy. It was a thrilling game with great sportsmanship and crowd enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, over in the library, students were happily completing a teacher BINGO game in a race to complete a bingo card by finding teachers who fit the brief. The winner’s of both the quiz and bingo will go into two draws to win movie tickets.

Thank you to everyone for getting on board. It was a fantastic day celebrating gratitude and random acts of kindness. With the reminder that International Women's Day belongs to everyone, everywhere.
