Meet a Real Author

Amie Kaufman Workshops

In the Year 9/10 Creative Writing Core English Elective, students envelop themselves in the writing process. As a way to learn more about this process and the inner workings of a published Author's brain, students will hear from Amie Kaufman, esteemed Australian Author.

Kaufman and her writing partner, Jay Kristoff, penned the set text for Creative Writing, Illuminae. The first iteration in this trilogy sees on-again, off-again couple, Kady and Ezra, fight to unveil a sinister secret as they are refugeed from their home planet.

In this once in a lifetime opportunity, all students taking Creative Writing this year will attend two sessions with Kaufman.

The first is a tour through how a writer's brain works. Participants will find out how Kaufman got into writing, get insight into a writer through little details and hear about the importance of experimenting in writing. There will be LOTS of opportunities for questions.

In the second workshop, students will start with a blank sheet of paper and leave the session with the beginning of the next big novel! With just a piece of paper and a pen, Kaufman will guide students through the brainstorming process, generating ideas, protagonists and interesting incidents to explore.

We are lucky to be able to offer limited spaces for additional students from all year levels, including those who are not taking Creative Writing but consider themselves the next budding author.

Students not taking Creative Writing who wish to apply for one of the limited spaces, need only write a 500-word short story following the prompt: Write a story about a character who takes a risk and puts themselves out there'.

Your short story must be submitted by 4pm, Fri 24 March in a Word document to Ms Montgomery at:

Happy Writing and good luck!
