Harmony Day

It was wonderful to see so many of our school community celebrate Harmony Day today.  Mrs Clark and the EAL/D team, school staff, and the Harmony Evening committee have worked very hard behind the scenes. I look forward to seeing as many of our school community as possible attend tonight’s Welcome event.

Solar Car Challenge

Congratulations to the students who represented Burrendah PS in the solar car challenge yesterday.  Alex, Isabella, Millie, and Misha have advanced to the state championships with their second-place win against 32 schools.  Thank you to Mrs Crouch and Mr Ward Darcy (a retired Physicist) who worked with these students over lunch breaks for several weeks.  I was very fortunate to attend the solar car challenge with Mr Darcy and our students. “Billy” the solar car won all of the first rounds, to advance to the finals. The finals were very exciting with only a split second between the solar car's placement- often resulting in a photo finish decision.

Public School Review

Our Public School Review was held in Term 1, Week 3. The Public School Review is a process to assist schools in continuing school improvement. Pleasingly the reviewers validated Burrendah met or exceeded the Standard in the following domains;

  • Relationships and Partnerships
  • Learning Environment
  • Leadership
  • Use of Resources
  • Student Achievement and Progress

The domain Teacher Quality is yet to be validated, with the reviewers returning to Burrendah early in Term 1, 2024. Burrendah PS staff have already commenced working with facilitator Mr Ben Calleja to implement the Department of Education’s newly released Quality Teacher Strategy.

Parent National Schools Opinion Survey (NSOS)

Based on the 161 responses to the Parent NSOS the Board will be focusing on three areas in 2023.

  1. Continue to seek ways to re-engage the community post Covid
  2. Continue to seek ways to promote sport
  3. Continue to seek ways to improve infrastructure of the school including the rollout of contemporary furniture

School Audit

Burrendah PS has been selected to participate in a school audit. Next week there will be three people from the Office of the Auditor General at Burrendah PS for the week conducting an OAG audit. This audit will provide valuable information on school processes to the OAG and the Department of Education.

NAPLAN

I would like to acknowledge the students of Year 3 and Year 5 for their commitment to completing NAPLAN testing over the last fortnight. It was an absolute pleasure to be in classrooms during this time.  Mrs Lindley, Mr Bradshaw, and I were very impressed with the confidence students displayed during this testing fortnight.  Thank you to parents/carers for supporting your child to attend school during NAPLAN.  We had 100% of students on the first day of NAPLAN complete their writing test. Outstanding!! It was clearly evident teachers and students were very well prepared for any technical issues and competently resolved problems. Congratulations also to Mr Bradshaw as the NAPLAN Coordinator for his attention to detail behind the scenes over the last 6 months to ensure NAPLAN went smoothly.

I would also like to acknowledge Mrs Scaramella for all of her work in the first few weeks of school to ensure information required by the Department of Education for NAPLAN was completed and submitted, a mammoth task with all the other new processes needing to be done at this time. Mrs Scaramella was recognised by Director General, Lisa Rogers, with a certificate for her dedication to Burrendah.
