INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM 2023

Mr. Donald Mayne

Instrumental Music Program

Learning an instruments provides students with the opportunity to improve their tactile and fine motor skills whilst learning how to plan, problem solve and focus on achieving goals.  There is a great deal of current research being done into the benefits of learning an instrument and it’s positive impacts on the cognitive, wellbeing and social aspects of life.

What do we offer at Red Cliffs Secondary College?

Red Cliffs Secondary College offers instrumental music lessons on several different instruments on a rotating timetable across the term. Students have lessons on either a Tuesday or Friday in 2023 and as much as possible we try to only have students miss one class per term on average.

In 2023, we have reintroduced Brass and Woodwind lessons into our program. That means at Red Cliffs Secondary College you currently have the choice of:

  •  Voice
  • Guitar
  • Bass Guitar
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • French Horn
  • Tuba
  • Flute
  • Clarinet
  • Saxophone (Alto and Tenor).

Drums currently have a waiting list due to the availability of the district teacher. We are not accepting new students for Drums at this time but hope too as soon as we can.

What about the Cost?

The Basic yearly lesson fee is $80. All students pay for this fee. Please note, students need their own guitar or bass guitar for lessons. Drums are not necessary to own but a practice pad is encouraged as the student develops their skills. The school does not supply Guitars, Bass Guitars or Drum accessories or kits for hire. If you have your own brass and woodwind instrument you only have to pay the basic $80 fee.

Instrument Hire are very affordable. If learning a Brass or Woodwind instrument you can learn and hire an instrument for less than $6 a week (a coffee a day)!

When hiring an instrument and having lessons for the total cast of $230 you get the following:

  •  An Instrument
  • accident insurance
  • repair costs (when needed)
  • A maintenance service once a year,
  • accessories (reeds and valve oil)
  • any resources needed to learn the instrument

Lessons outside of school are often $30 or more with a private teacher. That does not include an instrument in the costs.
