Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

We very much look forward to welcoming our Kindergarten and Year 1 students who will be returning to school on Monday, 18 October, and students in Years 2-6 the following week, 25 October.

In this newsletter, you will find further information regarding students returning to school. In transitioning back to school our work will naturally be about resuming teaching and learning face to face. However, we will also be supporting students by:

  • Rebuilding connections and feelings of belonging
  • Re-establishing known routines and rituals
  • Building students' belief they can succeed and achieve at school
  • Teaching social and emotional skills
  • Rebuilding trust and feelings of being secure
Our students need to know they are safe, loved and belong before they can fully engage in higher-order thinking. They need to tell us they are OK and we need to show them we are OK.

St Joseph's recovery and return to face to face learning and teaching

Like the rest of NSW, St Joseph's will also be in recovery from the extended stay at home orders and the pandemic. Our road to recovery is a process of balancing risks and the benefits of student learning, connection with faith, focus on wellbeing, and social and emotional learning.

The word ‘recovery’ implies that it will take time, it is gradual, and is not linear or without complexity.  We cannot predict the future and we need to be adaptable to respond to what may come. Our recovery requires all of us together, to stay grounded in the present, focus on what we can do to control our circumstances and wellbeing on a daily basis.

Our plans for the return of students

Our plans for recovery and the return of students to school include clear teaching and learning expectations, a focus on student wellbeing, and the mitigation of any risks for students and staff around COVID-19. We will need to be flexible around these plans and ask for your support as we strive to do all we can with the knowledge we have now and our experience as Catholic educators.

I invite you to the Returning To School page of this newsletter for further information regarding the next few weeks.

I thank all of our parents and carers of St Joseph’s for your very positive and caring support during remote learning and the work you have done with your children for many, many weeks.

As we return students we will work together with you, with a sense of hope and faith that our good God will be with us. We will get there and we will succeed.

In this Year of St Joseph, we turn to his example of confidence in God, courage and adaptability, and tenderness and love in responding to all he endured as the foster father of Jesus and husband of Mary.

St Joseph, pray for us.
