Year 12 Fashion Students Interpret the Future Beautiful theme

For the second year in a row, the Year 12 VET fashion students have had to adapt and adjust to the everchanging conditions of the pandemic. Interrupted learning was an understatement, but how they handled the shifting conditions was simply amazing. This disruption to the fashion design course, did have its merits even though it was not welcome. Disruption is one of the processes in design, for example designing a perfect garment and then disrupting it by making an unexpected change. And this is what these valiant students did as they acclimatized and responded to the conditions thrust upon them.

The theme Future Beautiful was born from responding to the lockdowns last year and providing a sense of hope for their future - a light in the tunnel. The students began by exploring futuristic themes and created a Futuristic Armour to protect them from all kinds of malice.

Then they needed to come up with a solution to creating sustainable pants for the future and were commissioned to design and make a pair of pants using only fabric remnants. Most of our fabric remnants were upholstery fabrics donated to us from ‘Window Workshop’ in High St. Malvern. The students designed a style of pants, modified a pattern, and then used patchworked to make the fabric, matching shapes, and colours. And Kapow! They looked amazing!

The second garment would be the showpiece; a gown for a gala event. The students designed beautiful gowns and chose their patterns and fabrics, and then just as we were about to cut out the fabric…lockdown! The students were thrown into cutting and making the garments with only pattern instructions, awkward online classroom meets and maybe a little help from mothers, grandmothers, and aunties. Stretching everyone’s capabilities, they were able to complete their gowns and eventually have a fashion shoot.

The photos speak for themselves; the models and fashion students had a lot of fun even though masks were compulsory. Congratulations to all the fashion students for their creativity and hard work and thanks to the wonderful models who fearlessly showcased the garments with little time to prepare. They enjoyed modelling with a blue butterfly back drop symbolizing the emergence into a beautiful future!
