Year  10 Painting and Printmaking

During Lockdown, students in the Year 10 Painting and Printmaking elective started preparing for their “My (still) Life” oil painting. When we return to school, students will begin the painting process by painting the fabric as it is in the background. Then gradually painting the objects moving towards the foreground. At home, students used Leonardo da Vinci’s, Garment study for a seated figure, as a reference photo to draw using graphite pencil on A3 cartridge paper. You would agree that their drawings are very impressive!

Year 10 Photography and Film

“The ordinary becoming extraordinary” was the theme for the Year 10 elective, Photography and Film. During home learning, students were asked to take black and white digital photographs of ordinary items in and around their homes to make them look extraordinary. Students achieved this by considering the art elements tone and texture, short depth of field and shooting the subject in front of a plain background. Some items which were creatively captured were: bobbins, inside a paper towel roll, cutlery, animals, plants and their father’s profile. This unit is a lead up to the analogue photos students will take when we return to school, using the College’s SLR cameras. Students will investigate the same theme, however, around the College grounds.

I look forward to seeing their imagination explored with silver gelatin prints!

Year 7 and 8 Paper Sculpture

During term three remote learning students have undertaken creating three-dimensional artworks using the material of paper as a base. A variety of techniques were used, including quilling and the ancient art of origami to create some wonderful artworks.  Students developed skills in construction, creating and exploring pattern, colour, repetition, shape and form along with plenty of problem solving skills along the way.

Art in remote learning was lots of fun, using paper to create artworks. It actually took me a long time to create my flower. It was very heavy and when I tried to make the stem it kept falling so I had to spend time working out this problem so the flower could stand up independently.  I researched many references before making my rose and other flowers by cutting/ripping the paper into cute petals.  I was really happy with the colours.  For the leaves at the end, I was intending to make them into angel type of wings so I could call it the "Holy Flower", but it would make it a lot heavier and wouldn't be able to stand, so I just put them upwards.  It was great fun taking and editing the photos afterwards to showcase my work.  Michelle La, Year 7

Visual Art - Assemblages

In remote learning Art students have been inspired by Melbourne Sculptor ‘Tracey Lamb’.  Assemblages have been created using recycled cardboard.  Students considered balance, shape and pattern within their work and undertook lots of problem solving along the way.  Some fantastic photos were taken by students at home with lots of thought going into composition and light sources.  Well done students.

Visual Communication and Design

Applying the Design Process

During Lockdown number 6, for Unit 2, Outcome 3, the talented Year 11 VCD students studied the Design Process to research, generate, develop and refine their concepts into fabulous final presentations. Most students chose to work in the design field of Communication Design to design book jackets and packaging. Two students chose architecture in the field of Environmental Design. I am very proud of every student for their application to this outcome in dealing with the challenges of remote online learning to follow the design process and complete such professional Final Presentations. WELL DONE YR11 VCD students!
