What’s Happening in Careers

Just as teaching and learning has taken on a new appearance in Term 2, the Careers program has gone online also. A number of programs running or being organised in Term 2 have been modified to suit the online platform, or have been postponed to later in the year when we can hopefully resume face-to-face interactions with students.

Over this term, key careers updates are posted to Compass, as well as on the Lalor Secondary College Careers website: www.lalorsccareers.com. Parents and students of all year levels are encouraged to access the website for various resources and information such as:

- Weekly Careers Newsletters

- Home Study Planner

- Links to various career videos- for example ‘A day in the life of a naturopath/landscape designer/general surgeon/social worker/electrician/etc’

- Career targets

Here is what’s been happening in careers so far this term:

Year 10

Due to the current circumstances and the importance of the safety and wellbeing of our students, the Work Experience program has been postponed indefinitely. Work Experience will not go ahead in the second week of Term 3 and instead a possible new date may be organised for later in the year. It was considered too risky to ask our students to actively seek a placement within the community and too difficult with many businesses closed or employers working from home. Students will be informed next term what the program will look like in 2020.

If there are any parents or students who have already organised a placement and would like to know how this information affects them, please email jovanka.jovcevski@education.vic.gov.au as soon as possible.

Year 11 and 12

-Career Action Plan Development and Careers Appointments

During Terms 1 and 2, every student in years 11 and 12 work to develop or adjust their Career Action Plans- documents that plan for and set goals to enter courses and careers of their choosing. The beginning of this term saw the last few appointments with year 11 students, and this week year 12 students began their appointments. Prior to their careers counselling appointments, year 12 students must complete a Pre-Appointment Form (link available on student Compass news feed) that seeks to draw out key interest areas and topics for discussion. So far it has been fantastic to see so many organised, motivated and ambitions students planning for their career pathway in 2021 and beyond.

-Careers Expos

As the annual VCE and Careers Expo was cancelled this year, the organiser and tertiary providers developed video content with information that would have been presented as seminars during the expo. This is a unique opportunity to view information about: tertiary courses, careers, universities, student experiences, study tips and VCE exam preparation. Log in details to access this resource is available on Compass for senior students. Additionally this week, on the 7th and 8th of May, Torrens University hosted a Virtual Careers Expo. Students were able to access 50 different institutions, virtual tours, download course guides and chat with tertiary institutions.

-Early Admissions Programs A number of universities provide programs that give students an early offer prior to ATARs being released- they include Victoria University (VU), La Trobe University and Australian Catholic University (ACU). Year 12 students can apply for these opportunities via the websites (links available on student Compass news feed) and year 11 students can see what the requirements are if they decide to apply next year. It is important to mention that VU has early admissions and scholarships available to both year 11 and 12 students this year, so it is absolutely worth checking them out. Online information sessions will be organised shortly with representatives from La Trobe and VU- keep an eye on Compass for updates.
