Lake Cowal by Charlotte Richards, Yr 8

So much effort for what seemed like so little physical reward

On the 21st of October, Ms Di Chiara, Ms Delmas and eight girls from year eight embarked on a rare experience to Evolution Open Pit Gold Mine in West Wyalong. Whilst one this three-day trip we learnt about the gold mining process, the link between gold mining and conservation, the industry's environmental and cultural impacts as well as seeking future opportunities in the mining industry.

Of a 200 tone monster truck filled with the deposit from Evolution minings open-pit gold mine, they only reach the equivalent of 12 fifty cents of gold per load.

Before I went on this trip I didn't completely understand all the work that goes behind the production of gold. Honesty I thought it was just people digging a big hole, hoping they would strike lucky and find a big gold nugget. Geologist, Scientists, Engineers, Accountants, Environmentalists, Community Representatives, etc all work together to mine the gold used in your electronics, Hi-tech health, aerospace, jewellery, awards, investment and large economic contribution.

It was an eye-opening experience of how the world works and to come face to face with the people in the mining community.

This trip was an eye-opening experience that has made me think about humanity, wastefully using non-renewable resources without knowing how hard it is to obtain them. Thank you to Ms Delmas and Ms Di Chiara for taking us on this trip and Evolution Mining for inviting us on their first school trip ever to the NSW site.
