Year 12 End of Year Picnic

Year 12 celebrated the end of their schooling career with a lovely picnic in Sans Souci. It turned out to be an absolutely lovely day and beautiful celebration of the strong friendships these students have built over their time at Canterbury Girls High.

Community Awards to outgoing Year 12 families

As each Year 12 graduates the school community recognises the contributions of family members throughout their daughters' years at Canterbury Girls.

In 2009 Pauline Hageman and Trevor Eastment joined the CGHS community when their first daughter Scout was in Yr 7. They now finish time with us with daughter Frankie graduating in 2019. For 11 years Pauline has been a constant member of the P & C, always supportive and full of great ideas, she  has always volunteered to run food stalls for performance with the support of Trevor dropping off drinks and other items. Both Pauline and Trevor have missed across those years very few fundraisers, always being supportive of school directions and fundraising. As well Trevor was instrumental in development of many of our gardens , giving valuable advice. Thank you for truly being part of our community, we appreciate the effort  and time you have put in.

In 2010 Chris Dunstan joined CGHS when first daughter Lucinda enrolled in Year 7, in 2019 he finishes as Eleanor graduates.  Chris has been our guiding light with constant ideas about Sustainability. We can thank Chris for driving the 2013 Campaign for Container deposits scheme and  for his full support of the 2014 Postcode 2193 Plastic Bottle Free campaign and of course as our local expert in terms of our Solar installation and striving for LED lights throughout the school. As well Chris has been a constant school gardener and supporter of all fundraising events with partner Kath.

Sincere thanks to Pauline and Trevor, and Chris, for their input into the Canterbury Girls community.

Thank you for the time and dedication given by the mentoring lawyers from Mackinson d'Apice, Moray & Agnew Lawyers and Hicksons Lawyers. The graduation evening was a wonderful reflection of not only the progress and participation of this years Mentors and Mentees, but also of the program of over the last 16 years. Canterbury Girls farewells this program for the final time and would like to thank all contributors over the longstanding running of this program.

Particular thanks to Ms Conroy who has coordinated the program for its final years and Ms Naisbett, who coordinated for a number of years prior. This program dates back to when Ms Ronayne was its first coordinator in her previous Head Teacher Welfare role!  Over 250 students have graduated the LEAPS program over the years; proving the value of strong mentoring relationships between professional workplaces and young people as they navigate the challenges of the mid-high school years.

Impro Australia Theatresports Regional Competition

Congratulations to our Junior TheatreSports Team on their success in the Impro Australia Theatresports Regional Competition.  The team consisting of Maya Strong, Sally-Ann Bird, Amelia Elliott and Zoe O Keefe all from Year 8.   The girls took their first steps into the mad zany world of performance improvisation and astounded their audience and themselves with their ability to play the games with energy, entertainment and bizarre characterisation.  Having met with success in this preliminary round the girls now await news of the next round in which they will be pitted against a further eight to ten teams to find out who goes through to the finals.

The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Science Awards 2019.

On Wednesday the 6th of November, Sarah and Hannah Veitch attended the Bryan Brown Theatre in Bankstown so they could both receive Science Awards from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.  In addition to their award they will receive the opportunity to go on a tour around the institute later this year.  The institute is involved in cutting edge research that is being carried out in relation to preventing and treating heart defects. Canterbury Girls High School is very proud of the Veitch Sisters for their achievements in their Year 11 Science courses and we hope that this recognition will encourage them to continue to follow their dreams in the arena of Science.

Principal Network Awards 2019

Each year schools are invited to nominate  school community members to recognise individuals, schools and communities that have made a significant contribution to students, the achievement of school goals and the promotion of public education. In 2019 Canterbury Girls High School chose to put forward outgoing parent Chris Dunstan   -  see the Community Awards earlier in this section for a summary of Chris's contributions to sustainability at Canterbury Girls. We look forward to congratulating Chris at the awards ceremony on November 21st to be held at Ashfield Boys HS.

Additionally Canterbury Girls put forward Head Teacher Teaching and Learning Ms Spiridoula Dervenis-Loupos as the coordinator of the school's Futures-focussed Learning Committee, part of the school's Learning Strategic Direction, for her leadership in this area. She was also acknowledged at the awards ceremony on October 21.

As Head Teacher leading the Futures Committee, Spiridoula has overseen implementation of Futures-Focussed pedagogies, building on Flipped Classrooms, gold standard Project based learning and Cognitive load theory. Most importantly she has coordinated staff ‘show and tell’ meetings so whole staff can be kept up to date, from the class teachers on the Committee, with the ways the futures team is addressing this area of the learning strategic direction, and ensuring that explicit teaching is accommodated to result in improved student outcomes.  Her overseeing of the library's updated layout and function as well as the development of flexible learning spaces in B7, B5 and A5 has also been part of Spiridoula's brief.

This however is a team award - many people had a hand in this and the hard working staff who put their faith and trust in something new and challenging are to be thanked for their efforts to continuously improve and innovate in the classroom for our students.
