Refugee Week, Red Nose Day and upcoming events
Refugee Week, held on the 18th to the 22nd of June, saw a fantastic range of activities organised by our community team. Every lunch time throughout the week students had the opportunity to come to the library with a device and participate in the free rice challenge. For every question correctly answered online 10 grains of rice is donated to the World Food Programme to help end hunger.
On Tuesday, at the whole school assembly, we had a guest speaker from World Vision, Libania, who came and spoke about her experience as a refugee. On behalf of MFG, we would like to thank her for her insightful presentation and for giving up her time. During the rest of the week, there was also a competition between home groups, with the prize being a pizza lunch, as to who could raise the most money to be donated to the Syrian refugee crisis. The winning home group was 8 Gilmore who raised $25.90.
On Friday there was a film festival on refugee stories which helped students to understand the lives of refugees and their experiences. We would like to thank everyone who participated and made these activities possible.
The 28th of June, the second last day of term two, was Red Nose Day, which aims to raise awareness and funds for the 3,200 Australian families that experience the unexpected death of a baby or child each year. We encouraged students to wear a splash of red to demonstrate their support to this cause. For a cold coin donation, students could also come and watch the film Hunt for the Wilderpeople and there were plenty of snacks provided. In total we raised $32 for this fantastic cause and it was a great way to end the term.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
MFG is also taking part in this year’s 40 Hour Famine, the backpack challenge. It will take place between the 17th to the 19th of August and the challenge is live with only the essentials for 40 hours as everything you need will be contained in a backpack. Globally there are 68.5 million refugees and displaced people - and more than half are under 18. But by joining the 40 Hour Famine Backpack Challenge, we can begin to understand what it's like to leave almost everything behind and show our support to those who need it most. We would like to get as many people involved as possible, so if you are interested please email Claire Byrnes clairevbyrnes02@gmail.com.
Friday 3rd August: Casual dress day – Jeans for Genes Day (raising funds for Children’s Medical Research Institute).
Friday 23rd August: Daffodil Day – supporting a cancer free future
