Library Events
Children's Book Week
This annual event highlights the importance of reading and draws on the stories and creativity of books. It is on from Monday August 18th - Friday August 24th this year.
The 2018 theme is 'Find your Treasure'. The stories we share and the books we read help to shape who we are and our understanding of the world around us. During Book Week this year we are inviting every student and MFGSC school staff member to share about a Fiction book that has really resonated with them and why that book means so much to them - why do you treasure that book? It may be that you love the story or particular characters or the the way the setting is described or even that you remember someone you love reading it aloud to you.
Eg. I treasure my copy of the book My Family and other animals by Gerald Durrell. It was the class novel during my first year of high school and my English teacher (who had grown up in Greece) was able to really bring the setting of Corfu alive when she read aloud to us. It's about an English family who moved to Corfu for some sunshine. I love all of the characters in the family and the local people Gerry meets when he is out exploring the island with his dog. My favourite character is Spiro who starts off as their taxi driver but ends up being a part of the family - helping them learn about life on Corfu. I cannot wait to visit and see the places described. (Miss Marshall).
During Book Week the school library will have library displays and daily competitions (with lucky dip prizes) based on the theme including a Book Week Trivia Quiz hosted by our Circle of Friends Reading Club members and craft activities set up for the week based on the theme of treasure. We invite everyone to vote for which Children's Book Council of Australia shortlisted title they think will win the Book of the Year competition for Older Readers- see the library display for entry forms (The winner will get their own copy of their favourite shortlisted book).
We invite all students to enter our major Book Week 2018 Writing Competition.
The theme is : "Write 100 - 150 words about your favourite fiction book and why you treasure it".
All entries can be emailed to Miss Marshall (see below for my email address) by Friday August 17th - please indicate in your email if you are happy for your writing piece to be added to our new school library website!! The prizes will be a $20 Dymocks Bookshop Voucher and a Darrell Lea Chocolates pack! All entrants receive acknowledgement certificates and a golden treasure. The winner will be drawn on Friday 24th August at 8 a.m. and announced on Compass.
Looking forward to reading your entries! Good luck!
