Fiona Lawrie : Education week

CELEBRATING EDUCATION WEEK

As part of MFG’s celebration of ‘Education Week’, alumna, Fiona Lawrie attended a whole-school assembly to speak to students about her experiences at MFG and beyond.

Fiona is nothing short of inspirational. She is a successful woman who has followed her passion and has become an industry leader. After finishing secondary school, Fiona went on to complete an apprenticeship working in the building industry as a machine repairer. She now works for herself as a managing director for the company she founded, ‘Trades Women Australia’. Fiona works with large businesses to implement strategies to improve female participation and retention in their trade workforce. Her company also works with the Federal Department of Education and Training to promote apprenticeship pathways, through a variety of marketing campaigns and projects. Fiona is an exceptional role model for young people today.

Whilst speaking about her 'less conventional' career pathway, Fiona named ‘determination’, amongst other positive attributes, as being pivotal to her success in a male dominated industry. She encouraged students to make the most of opportunities presented during their school years and beyond, push boundaries, take on key roles in organisations, be strong leaders and positive role models and stressed the importance of fostering a supportive culture amongst women.

Thank you, Fiona Lawrie, for sharing your story with the students and staff at MFG.
