Bicycle Safety

Cyclists continue to be over represented in injury and fatality collisions involving vehicles, so much so that cyclists are considered vulnerable road users on our roads.

Here are some tips to help you avoid being one of them!

  • Road Rules: Abide by the road rules!  The same rules apply to cyclists as they do motorists including traffic lights, mobile phones, pedestrian crossings and road signs.
  • Helmets: You must wear an approved bicycle helmet at all times whilst riding your bike.  It could save your life!
  • Night Riding: Be as visible as possible! Have one white light visible to the front of the bike and one red light visible to the back.  You also require one red reflector to the rear of the bicycle.

Footpaths:  11 years old or under can ride on the footpath.  12 years and over can ride on the footpath if accompanying and supervising a child rider under 12 years of age or if the rider has a medical certificate

Bicycle Theft

Bicycles unfortunately are continuing to be stolen on a regular basis. Unfortunately many bicycles do not have any identifying features which make it difficult for police to reunite you with your bike if it is found.

To prevent your bicycle from being stolen:

  • Secure your bicycle with a good chain or lock.
  • Leave your bicycle in a good location if possible in view of CCTV cameras.
  • Utilise lock up cages and sheds at schools, train stations and private property.

To help Police reunite you with your stolen bicycle:

  • Take photographs from different angles of your bicycle and photograph identifying features on your bike.
  • Record any serial numbers, brand, make, dimensions and tyre types.
  • Register your bike!  We suggest registering your bicycle on Stolen Bicycles Australia site: stolenbikes.com.au

Secure your bikes identity, report as stolen so anyone in Australia on the site can help you find your bike, search bikes recovered by Police and receive notifications of stolen bikes in your area.

With all of this information, police have a much easier job of reuniting your bike with you.  Many bicycles are handed into police but without photographs, specific details or registering on a site such as stolen bicycles Australia there are many bicycles that unfortunately have no way of making it back to their owners!

See over the page regarding our free bicycle registration day!
