Indonesian Model - United Nation Conference.

It was a pleasure to take the year 11&12 Indonesian study students to the Model UN Conference at Treasury Theatre on Friday the 11th August 2017. I appreciated their hard work and preparations for the Indonesian Model UN Conference.  Students spoke confidently using their language skills. Students were excellent, very well researched and informed on their allocated countries (The US, Congo, United Kingdom and PNG) and very keen to debate topical issues which was a real highlight. Although the topic of “ The Responsibility to Protect: Preventing Mass Atrocity Crimes” was challenging, it did provide the students with a rare opportunity to discuss and debate a real world issue that is hotly debated by the International community and the United Nation Organisation itself. Thanks again to the Department of Education and Training Victoria for sponsoring this wonderful event  and their hard work in preparing for the first ever Indonesian Model UN Conference.

Student’s reflections;

On the 11th of August, the Year 11 and 12 Indonesian classes were fortunate enough to participate in a Model UN Conference managed by the United Nations Association of Australia.  On this day, we were required to negotiate a new UN Resolution:  The Responsibility to Protect: Preventing Mass Atrocity Crimes. Each school that participated was allocated a country for which we were meant to represent in the conference (We represented Papua New Guinea, America, Congo and the United Kingdom). Throughout the day, we engaged in diplomatic relations with other ‘countries’ whilst speaking in the Indonesian language!

This conference allowed us to not only expand our knowledge on the Indonesian language, but also gave us an insight into the global issues that pertain to the rest of the world.

We thank Ms. Dux for organising and allowing us to be part of this great experience.

I was tasked with leading my group, which included; Baeden Maurice, Cooper MacDonald and Riley Whitehouse to represent Congo at the United Nations conference in the city. The day was an amazing experience where, as students we were able to meet people from many different schools from around the area and put our knowledge of the Indonesian language into action. The day focused around amending bills, which were designed to protect the citizens of all countries against mass atrocities. For myself, the day was a great experience, where practicing what we have learnt throughout the year, could be put into action with many other students from across the state .  Overall, the conference was a wonderful event and it has helped both myself and everyone else further their Indonesian studies.
