Top Arts 2020
On March 11, Zach Smyrnis, his family and I attended the opening celebration of Top Arts at the National Gallery of Victoria. It was a momentous occasion celebrating Zach's wonderful achievement. The exhibition attracted 1700 submissions with 112 shortlisted and only 44 finalists.
The opening ceremony included a Welcome to Country didgeridoo and song performance by Murrundindi of the Wurundjeri people, and speeches by Michele Stockley, NGV Senior Educator and other dignitaries.
Since the exhibition began, Zach has presented a talk to visitors at the gallery, and was among the few finalists selected for video interview. Each year, Top Arts showcases among the most outstanding VCE Studio Arts and VCE Art folios and artworks across the State of Victoria. To be shortlisted, a student must:
- Achieve an A or A+ for both their final artworks and folio/visual diary.
- Fulfill assessment criteria for VCE Studio Arts or Art.
- Demonstrate strong conceptual development.
- Display imaginative and individual qualities.
- Demonstrate technical excellence.
- Demonstrate an awareness of aesthetic considerations.
- Demonstrate an awareness of past and contemporary art practices.

Year 3 Art Project
Our Year 3 Junior Art students created decorative artworks on card, in response to their inquiry into the art and culture of the Torres Strait Islands. Their main focus was contemporary artist Tatapai Barsa. Students explored tempera colours and developed skills in paint, line-work and the depiction of coastal themes. They were so delighted with the outcome that we have shared a selection of their works here.
