7C Science Experiment - Eclipses

On Thursday October 26, 7C science students performed some science activities to demonstrate eclipses. Students had to be in groups of three to represent the sun, moon and earth. Students then had to (using a torch, tennis ball and polystyrene ball) model how solar and lunar eclipses happen. They then got competitive by performing a Kahoot quiz on Eclipses – congratulations to Jiaking (the winner!) The learning goals and success criteria for the lesson are listed below:

Year 7 Science Works – Sporty Maths Excursion

On Friday the 27th of October, the Year 7 students all went to Science works for a day of maths wonder and investigations.

The Sporty Maths program uses the hands-on activities in the Sportsworks exhibition at Scienceworks for students to measure and record data relating to aspects of fitness.  The data collected is collated back at school and used to investigate students’ understanding in a variety of maths topics, including:  Measurement, decimals, fractions, collecting and analysing data and graphing data.

Students worked in small groups to analyse parts of the data and share their findings with others.

A great day was had by all!

Year 7 - Australian Mathematics Competition

The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) was introduced in Australia in 1978 as the first Australia-wide mathematics competition for students. It has since spread internationally, with students in more than 30 countries attempting the same problems. In recent years the competition has been available in two formats (online and paper), allowing even more students to participate worldwide.

The AMC is for students of all standards. Students are asked to solve 30 problems in 75 minutes. The problems are designed to test mathematical thinking and questions are designed so that they can be answered just as quickly without a calculator as with one. The problems get more difficult through the competition, so that at the end they are challenging to the most gifted students. Students of all standards will make progress through the problems, and also be challenged along the way.

Congratulations to the following Year 7 students who participated and received certificates:

Certificate of Credit :

  • Rory Johnstone
  • Jiaking Tu
  • Desmond Yap

Year 8 Medieval Day

Last Wednesday was ‘Medieval Day’. Year 8 students participated in a day of activities and learned about what it would have been like to live in the Middle Ages. Topics covered included crime and punishment, social classes, entertainment, and weapons and armour.  There was lots of laughter as students learned games and dances, screams in the scary demonstrations of some brutal punishments and many eager volunteers to dress up in the armour. Despite some determined battles, no-one managed to defeat the Lorenzo the knight!

8C Science Experiment – Energy Transformations

On Friday October 27, 8C science students performed some science activities to demonstrate the ‘Law of conservation of energy’ as part of our Physics unit. Students had to be in groups and design mini experiments to show energy transformations. They then had to write down observations and complete a practical report. Congratulations to Tirron who was the start student for this lesson!

Yr 9 excursion – Marvellous Melbourne

On Monday November 1, Yr 9 students went to the city to complete the Marvellous Melbourne experience. Students put themselves into teams to work together to find certain monuments in the city and answer questions about them in a booklet they had to fill in. The orienteering and use of public transport was challenging for some students, but they all persevered. Each team was given a measuring tape and protractor and applied various academic skills in a real-life context. The experience also promoted self-directed learning, teamwork, independence and responsibility.

Students learnt about the history of the Shot Tower in Melbourne Central and used Pythagoras’ Theorem on the Architectural Fragment. They also went on the ‘Science by the mile’ trail where they had to answer questions based on science and the environment. All students behaved impeccably on the day and proudly represented our College. On behalf of the Yr 9 students, we’d like to thank Miss

Andrew for organising this wonderful excursion and all of the staff who attended.

9A Science Experiment

On Monday October 23rd, 9A science students dusted off their Yr 7 ‘Bunsen burner’ licences and participated in an experiment titled ‘Convection’. Students have been learning about heat, temperature and methods of heat transfer lately. This experiment tested their knowledge of convection as a type of heat transfer. Students boiled water with glitter in it, to observe a convection current. They completed a practical report based on their observations.

Year 9 - Shrine Of Remembrance Excursion

As part of their work in History on World War 1, Year 9 students took part in the Spirit of Anzac program at the Shrine of Remembrance. Students learnt about conditions for the soldiers and significant battles that Australian soldiers fought in. They toured the Shrine Museum and saw interesting displays, documents and artefacts, including one of the boats that was used in the Gallipoli Landing in 1915. The students said, ‘it was amazing’ and ‘even though I find History boring this made it really interesting.’

Year 12 Final Assembly

Year 12 students participated in their final college assembly. Our Prep students gave them a guard of honor, and also sang a farewell song. We wish all year 12 students the very best for their upcoming exams.

Special Interest Baking & Cake Decorating

Staff High Tea

Our speacial intrest baking & cake decorating class presented staff with an amazing high tea during lunchtime. Students worked very hard preparing cheese cakes, scones, chocolate mousse, sandwiches, pinwheels plus other delicious sweets. A great effort from our special interest baking & cake decorating class, which is one of the class options students have while undertaking  V3 studies (VCE over 3 years) at Carwatha College P-12.
