Solar Car

Event Reflection

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the 2022 Victorian Model Solar Vehicle Competition! In the extra-curricular program, teams work on their cars on Thursday afternoons and weekend workdays throughout Terms 2 and 3. Box Hill High School teams won 1st, 3rd and 4th place in the Victorian competition and won 3rd place in the International Competition. The International Competition comprised of the winners of the Victorian event and solar cars from Taiwan.

The event was held at Brunswick Primary School with sun levels mainly between 20% and 80%.  The pursuit format put a very different slant on the event compared to the normal one or two lap sprint event.

We often saw cars that got away quickly from the start and would have been expected to win a one lap race being gradually overhauled and caught as the race progressed over several laps.  The longer race time makes aerodynamics and reliability more important.

We also noted that the performance of some cars tended to change significantly with Sun level changes.

We look forward to seeing everyone back again next year!
