Library News

The Library saw Christmas come early as we put up our Christmas trees as a focus for the donation of stationery for the Salvation Army’s charity drive. Year 11 students were collecting items this term and all the donations have been overwhelming. The Salvos provide backpacks, drink bottles and stationery for students to take to school, so they can start the new year with all the requirements for class.  Thank you to everyone who helped us fill so many boxes with beautiful new stationery for the Salvos!

The annual magazine Crossroads was distributed from the Library this term, and saw a steady stream of students picking up their copies. It was combined with the Year 12 annual Class of 2022 magazine to provide a memorable record of life in Year 12, post-Covid. There are still copies for sale at the main Office.

We have also enjoyed hosting an event with prize-winning CBCA author, Leanne Hall who presented a creative writing workshop to sixty students. A week later we hosted a Maths masterclass for 80 students, and three chess tournaments so this term has been a particularly busy one 😊

CHESS TOURNAMENT

Chess has been a popular past time in the library in 2022.  It is very common to see multiple games of chess being played at both recess and lunchtime in the library which prompted a fourth chess tournament for 2022 to be organised on Tuesday 6th December. 60 students from Year 7 through to 9 signed up to participate in this Swiss Style Chess Tournament ran by teacher and passionate chess player, Chris Bailey. The crowned winner from Year 8 was awarded their UNO cards and all students commented on their overall enjoyment of the day.

Due to the continuing and growing popularity of chess, we hope that a termly chess tournament may be something that becomes a regular feature on the BHHS calendar.  In the meantime, we welcome all students into the library on any day to pick up a board and a chess clock and play. 😊

Over the holidays we are hosting a Summer Reading Challenge, with a new look Library Home page (see Compass>Favourites>Library). You will find some competitions and information to help you borrow eBooks and audiobooks over the holidays, and a Summer Bucket List Challenge to keep you reading and having fun until next term starts again. There are prizes and house points to win!  Enjoy your summer break!

IT’S BACK!  PARENT & CHILD BOOK CLUB

If you love reading and would like to share your passion for books with your nearest and dearest then we would love you to join our new parent and son/daughter Book Club.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

We know that everybody is busy and so we will select one book per term that both a parent and student can read at their leisure.  At the end of the term, a date will be set where we meet either in person or online via TEAMS and discuss the value of the book, its characters, themes, issues and the overall enjoyment.  We also welcome parents who just want to know more about new Young Adult books.  By signing up to our Book Club we will send you a list of recommended YA books that we have read and know are popular with students at BHHS.

WHY JOIN?

The breadth and scope of YA fiction has evolved over the years and now includes more realism, romance, diversity, and inclusivity than ever before.  As parents, we spend hours of our time reading to our children when they are young but often this stops when our children become proficient readers themselves.  Sharing ideas and thoughts about a book, understanding how different generations process really important ideas and themes and bridging and reforming a reading connection is a fabulous way to engage and support your child’s education (many of the themes covered in English including illusion, reality, belonging, identity, conflict, agency and friendship are explored in the books that we will read) and branch into this amazing genre.

INTERESTED?

Send me an email at kylie.pearson@education.vic.gov.au with your name and your child’s name and year if you would like to be involved.

The Library Team would like to wish you all a safe and relaxing break.

Merry Christmas to all.....

Happy holidays!!
