Languages

It was another busy term with lots of activities happening inside and outside the classroom.

Congratulations to our Year 12 class of 2022 on completing their oral and written language exams. It was exciting to see students come out of the oral exam with happy smiles on their faces and a great sense of relief.

Activities in German

Semester 2 Year 7 students participated in another Y7 incursion where they learnt about significant people, places and products in German-speaking countries, sampled a traditional German pretzel and decorated PASCH pencil cases. Our PASCH contacts from the Goethe-Institut Australien also gave a short presentation on what it means to be a student at a PASCH school.

Year 8 students completed two units which focussed on learning language to describe their home and city. Their assessment tasks included a written text describing their home in German and a speaking task. For this, students had to role play a conversation between a German tourist asking for information about sights and attractions in Melbourne and a person working at an information centre at Federation Square making suggestions based on the tourist’s interest. Listen to sample conversations by Kira Schonhardt (8E) and Ivy Hong (8J) as well as Alex Pham (8D) and Justin Zappulla (8A).

In Term 4, Year 9 students prepared for the Fit in Deutsch A1 exam. The exam is based on the European Framework of Languages and allows students to gain an internationally recognised certificate of their language skills. External examiners from the Goethe-Institut will run the exam at Box Hill High School on 9 February 2023. Families will receive further information via Compass. We encourage all students participating in the exam to continue revising important vocabulary using Quizlet.

Activities in Chinese

Year 7 students learned to recite a famous Chinese poem and created a poster to illustrate their chosen poem.

Year 8 students participated in a cultural incursion as outlined in Ms Zeng’s report.

Year 9 students applied their language skills in an authentic shopping transaction at Box Hill Shopping Centre. Please see Mrs Lin’s report and her students’ feedback.

Cultural Diversity Week 11-21 March 2023

As the year is coming to an end, the Languages Domain in cooperation with the Wellbeing team is planning a number of activities to celebrate Cultural Diversity Week and Harmony Day in Term 1. We are organising several lunchtime activities across the week and would appreciate any parent helpers to assist with the running of these activities. Parent helpers require a Working with Children Clearance. If you are interested in getting involved, please email Mrs Kühn (Jana.Kuhn@education.vic.gov.au).

The Languages Team wishes all students and families a restful holiday. We look forward to seeing you back at school in 2023.

Year 7 PASCH Incursion

Year 8 Chinese Incursion - Year 8 Chinese Teaching Team

A Cultural Learning Experience

On the fourth of October, our students in Year 8 elective Chinese classes were given a wonderful opportunity to interact with their language and enjoy the culture. The incursion was filled with two fun and interactive activities, including the traditional Mongolian dance and the Tai Chi Fan workshops. Both workshops were demonstrated in the language by experts. Students were happy with the cultural activities.

Y9 Chinese Box Hill Centre Shopping Excursion

On 24/11/2022, Y9 Chinese class walked to the Box Hill Shopping Centre at the start of period 1. Mrs Lin introduced many store signs in Chinese on the way to the shopping centre. Students explored a variety of food and items in different Chinese stores. Some students had a conversation with the shop assistants in Chinese and bought foods. They all had a great experience practising Chinese with the public.   Please see below for Student's recounts.

The excursion to Box Hill Central exposed us to many different Chinese foods. We got to browse groceries and the food court to learn about the variety of food it provides. We also ordered food in Chinese, the first time we've been able to practice with the public. It was a great experience - very interesting and eye opening. The food we ordered was also delicious.

Our excursion to Box Hill central gave us the opportunity to apply our knowledge of Chinese into the real world. We were shown a variety of different Chinese shops which had so many different foods to choose from. Ordering in Chinese was a good experience as well as the food was very tasty.

We experienced a wide range of Chinese cuisine during the trip to Box Hill Central. To discover the range of foods it offers, we had the opportunity to peruse the grocery store and the food court. We were able to use our newly acquired Chinese language skills to actually order lunch in Chinese. We all enjoyed the dishes that we order, it was a wonderful event that was both fascinating and enlightening.
