Year 9 History (by Zoe Kusserow)

This semester in Year 9 History we looked at World War 1 and many of its causes, effects and a glimpse into what life was like at War.  From looking at the five main causes of the war to learning about life in the trenches and how War was for thousands of soldiers, we’ve definitely become a lot more familiar with WW1.  Learning about all the causes was fascinating, and knowing how all these different factors intertwined to create the war showed us how things such as strength and fear for example combined together can be extremely powerful. One activity that my class did that stood out was trying a variety of different foods that somewhat replicated what a soldier would eat at war.  Some foods weren’t so bad… from a plain biscuit to bread, it could be worse!  However, it did get worse when things such as Spam or bitter chocolate were introduced.  Even though we could not exactly replicate the actual foods that were common at war, my class had a very fun time and were all keen and intrigued to get a small grasp onto one of the many lifestyle factors for soldiers during WW1.  History this semester has been very entertaining, from lots of interactive classes to engaging stories about the war, we have gained a lot from this unit and overall a better understanding of WW1.  We will look forward to continue learning and what’s to come in the near future!

Year 8 History (by Lily Hersbach, Charlotte Varica and Claire Cox)

In 2022 Year 8 History, we all experienced a very interactive class experience. Using hands-on learning, we could enjoy and get involved in our two units; Medieval Europe and Shogunate Japan.  During our Medieval Europe unit we learnt about the social hierarchy of Europe, where we got to play a game where we all took the roles of these people. It helped us to understand how their society worked. During our Shogunate Japan unit we learnt about the acronym COMA. This helped us do source analysis. We learnt about the Samurai, their values, and what they consider ‘honourable’ which was compelling to learn about.  As a fun end of year activity, we participated in an 'Escape the Classroom' where we had to solve different puzzles based around what we have learnt throughout this year. This experience was exciting and a great team building activity.  Overall history this year was overall a very gratifying very enjoyable experience with a great mixture of hands-on interactive learning and bookwork.
