WALKING THE LINE
On Monday 13 February, our Year 10 Maths Methods class of students participated in a game called ‘Walk The Line’ as an enjoyable alternative way to engage with the topic of algebra currently being studied. A four-square court was transformed into a cartesian plane, and students were told to form graph lines from equations the teacher called out. We stood along the x-axis of the Cartesian plane, and then had to find and stand on the corresponding y-axis value of the linear equation Mr Killeen called out.
This was a fun method of demonstrating how equations are displayed on a Cartesian plane. Additionally, it helped a lot of students comprehend how negative coordinates are presented on a graph as it provided a visual and immersive learning experience.
Finally, the activity challenged and extended our mathematical skills as it concluded with a demonstration of a parabola’s equation graph, demonstrating the rules around negative and positive squared integers.
These types of immersive educational experiences are beneficial to many students, as they provide a different perspective to a concept, where the student can engage with elements of it.
