From Laura Harris, Cattle Team Coordinator
On Saturday 1 April the Kinross Wolaroi School Cattle Team headed out to Windermere Farm to start the task of packing for the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Three utes, two trailers plus the truck carrying our steers finally hit the road to Sydney to compete in the school and purebred/trade steer competitions.
We exhibited a team of 12 steers:
We were very fortunate to partner with Beaumah Pastoral Co, Wattle Grove Speckle Park and Beau River Beef for our remaining steers and thank them very much for the support of our cattle team.
Our team was made up of 17 members to represent Kinross Wolaroi School at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
We started off our first competition day on cloud nine in the school’s Parader competition with Caitlin Adam winning Grand Champion School Parader under Judge Matthew Sowden from Sowden Cattle in Queensland. It was an incredibly special win for all involved and one we won’t forget.
Also on the Wednesday night under lights, we represented Kinross Wolaroi in the Speckle Park Feature Steer Show coming away with a second and third in a very strong field of steers.
Moving on to our first day of steer judging on Thursday 6 April, there was a very early 4am start to prepare for the long day ahead of torrential rain on and off.
We came away with lots of ribbons from numerous classes throughout the day out of a fantastic line up of a couple of hundred steers.
Our steers were then sold via auction during the Young Auctioneers Competition Final, and we were lucky enough to have the 3rd top priced steer, Kinross Wolaroi T099 - known fondly as JB - selling for $7.80/kg live.
Our animals were then processed, and we eagerly anticipated the results. For our first year back competing again, we had some fantastic results:
Overall, we were incredibly happy with the performance of our steers; on average scoring equal to 80 points or higher.
Many thanks must be made as this was a huge team effort, to put a team together a for the Sydney Royal Easter Show, with only a few months preparation.
KWS 1sts
KWS 1st Grade had their first game on Sunday. For many of the girls, this was their first game of the season. The girls came up against Molong 1st Grade, a tough competition for our first match. We were defeated 3-1 but despite this loss it was a fantastic start to our season. Well done to Tess Wong who scored the goal.
The girls had multiple circle entries, where we looked dominant in attack, and shut down many of our opposition's scoring opportunities in defence. Maka Mutyiri played exceptionally well in goals. Phoebe Smith had a dominant first game and was fantastic in attack, showing her aggression in the circle and getting outcomes. Sophie Luelf was dominant in the midfield and created many counter attacking opportunities. Phoebe Poole was solid in defence, and directed the team well from the back.
There were multiple 1st grade debutantsin the side: Elke Sweetapple, Lolli-Rose Pasquale, Clare Wood, Zoe Wood and Josie Muddle - congratulations to these girls.
We look forward to the next few weeks, as we continue to train as a squad and move through the trial process of selecting our 1st Grade team for the 2023 season.
KWS Celtics vs CYMS
The KWS Celtics played the Cyms Tazers in their first game of the season.
Lily Henderson, Laura Cox and Charlotte Ferguson are to be congratulated on their excellent efforts for their first ever game of Hockey. All three girls improved throughout the game in their dribbling and tackling skills. Zoe Harmer and Katie Lawler worked hard in defence, ably supporting our goalie Zoe Lane, who made some impressive saves throughout the game.
Charlie Swift, Poppy Blair, Eva Bonnington, Ruby Leigo and Ebony Inman worked hard throughout the game trying to gain momentum in their attacks on goal. The team showed significant improvement by the second half, with all team members committing and succeeding in a greater number of tackles.
Cyms Tazers were stronger on the day, however the Celtics are looking forward to continuing to improve over the season.
KWS Heat vs Molong
KWS Heat was ready for their first game, after one training session! They came up against Molong, who are always very competitive. We had a challenging first half. Pixie Harmer worked hard in goals, whilst the experienced players (Hamish, Willa and Olive) tried hard to help newer players learn the rules.
After a half time debrief we formed a new plan and the second half saw the scoreline 1-1. With a final score of 4-1, the Heat should be satisfied with the start and we are ready to work hard and make some winning plays in the weeks ahead.
KWS Knicks vs OAGS
Knicks played OAGS on Monday 1 May in thfirst match of the season after just one practice session. Jimmy Hutching in Year 10 gave a stellar performance in goals, making some challenging saves. Kelly Hulett who is an exchange student from South Africa, played extremely well and did not limit herself to the forward line but backed up the defence player as well. Unfortunately we lost 4-0 but the opposition played very well. Mack Sweetapple did a sterling job on the wing and the backs and halves worked very hard to keep the opposition at bay. It was a very entertaining match and Jimmy Hutching deserved the accolade of man of the match.
With the wintry weather well and truly here, we are right into our rugby season. The recent holidays saw 35 of our top players attend a camp at the Wolaroi Campus. We were joined by rugby squads from Cranbrook School and St Edmund's Canberra. An enormous amount of groundwork was done by the boys and the staff and we look forward to some great results this year.
Our first full school fixtures took place last Saturday with most of our teams heading to Coonabarabran to take on The Armidale School. There were some excellent results and our 1st XV claimed back the "Coona Cup". Despite the wet and cold conditions, our students need to be praised for their performance on and off the field. Our standard of play was tremendous, the cheering and support for all our teams was first class, and the behaviour of the students was something of which our rugby program can be very proud. Of particular note was our U14 Girls, U16 Girls and Opens Girls all joining us in Coonabarabran to take on TAS. The girls secured 5 wins and a draw. It is great to see our girls' program flourishing.
We also need to acknowledge our U16C and U14B teams who made the tough road trip to St Joseph's College in Sydney. The boys were excellent, despite losing both games in narrow losses. Similarly, special mention to our U13B team. This was their first game for the School, which is a huge honour for these young men. As TAS don't have an U13B team we were able to secure a game for them against the Orange Emus. It was played in wet and wild conditions but our boys secured a great 50 - 10 win. Supporting these boys was our terrific 3rd XV, for whom we were unable to secure a game on the weekend. The mighty 3rds stood in the rain and supported our 13B's and, once the game was over, had a training session. Proud would be an understatement.
Results from the weekend are attached below:
This Saturday is our first home fixture with all teams playing at Kinross Wolaroi. Fixtures are available at the link below. Games commence from 11am, so please come and support our players. The Rugby Club will be on hand to run the canteen and BBQ and they are always requiring assistance. The NSW Equestrian Australia Interschools Championships were held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre 18-21 April. Kinross Wolaroi had three students representing the school, who finished with fabulous results.
The girls had their Combined Training competition first, which consists of a dressage test and a showjump round:
The girls then competed in the Showjumping over two rounds with the final placings:
A fantastic result for the girls in very tough competition. We now wait to see if Audrey and Hannah are named in the State team to compete at the Nationals later in the year.
Our polocrosse players were busy in the holidays too, playing a South Africa V Australia Junior PX series.
Zoe Stevenson, Erica Stuart & Ryan Weston representing Australia, played 3 very close games, South Africa winning the first 23/22, then the Aussies winning next 2 - 22/14 and 22/20. Ryan was named champion male player of the series, an outstanding achievement. These three are amazing players and we can’t wait to see them in action at the North West Equestrian Expo in Coonabarabran this year.

Rowing will start a PE Unit for all Year 8 students in Term 3, 2023. The ‘Rowing PE Unit’ involves taking all Year 8 students to the Rowing Shed on Spring Creek Dam and doing some selection / TID testing on the entire cohort.
We do this unit in PE to introduce students to a sport many wouldn’t know about or have experienced. This unit will conclude in Week 4 of Term 3 after putting the students through a rowing session in the swimming pool and a few sessions on the rowing machines.
If you are interested in potentially choosing rowing as your summer sport, please see below:
Further information about rowing is available on our HUB page at the below:
Congratulations to Kinross cricketer Phoebe Johnston for her recent selection in the New South Wales Country U16 State Squad. As part of this selection, Phoebe will attend training and matches at the State training facility in Sydney throughout the off-season, receiving coaching from some of the State's best. This is recognition of her hard work on and off the field, and we look forward to what the future holds for Phoebe.
