Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

Our Year 6 students joined 1500 students from 30 schools for the annual ANZAC March to Beale Park in the City of Cockburn last Thursday. Thank you to Room 8 who put together an ANZAC assembly for our school on this day as well.

Could parents assist duty staff by checking that names on jackets are easy to read as the jackets are often removed during recesses? This will assist us to find the owners.

Currently Room 4, used for Art is having some modifications undertaken so it can be also accessed  for science. It is hoped that this work will be completed in the next two weeks.

Our thanks to the cleaners Naomi and Helen, as well as the two Johns, for their work on our garden areas during the holiday break. Thank you also to Paul McLean and Sarah for painting a protective coating on our seats in the yarning circle garden.

Mr Robinson has secured some resources for a project involving the recycling of soft plastics used to hold bread. We would like to invite all families to send in their empty plastic bread bags with the crumbs removed. They can be deposited in the specially marked boxes at the office. At the end of the promotion period on 7 July, the weight of the bags will go towards vouchers for new sports equipment. If you are able to support this initiative, that would be great. In 2022, schools collected 10 tonnes of soft plastic which was the equivalent weight of an elephant.

The school is again supporting the Rotary Club of Fremantle by collecting cans of non- perishable food that will then be distributed by St Patrick’s Community Support Centre. We would like to encourage all, of our community to donate a can and arrange to drop this off to the basket at the office between now 12 May. If you are able to support this venture, it would be

very much appreciated. Last year over $10,000 was collected to assist the homeless and those on hard times.

The school will be promoting with students the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Information on how to become involved is available online. Students are encouraged to read 12 books during May-September from a selection of 7000 titles. Once registered, students can plan and log books from the online list that they read during the Challenge. There is something for everyone from historical novels to graphic novels, comics to newspapers, song lyrics to poems as well as a great selection of Aboriginal literacy resources that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language and culture. Prizes and certificates are also incorporated into the Challenge. Several of our students entered last year. It was a great way to promote reading as a pastime.

Our school representative on the English committee will speak to the students on Monday and is available to help students to log on to record books read.

Please talk to your teacher if you have any queries or have already signed up.
