Year 5 Leadership Incursion

On Friday 6th November, the year 5 students participated in a virtual incursion run by UPP. The purpose of the day was to build student knowledge and develop an awareness of the definition of leadership and teamwork. The day was broken up into three different sessions, each with a focus.

Through a wide range of interactive activities, students learnt the importance of teamwork and communication. Some of the activities included a hula hoop game, where students had to work together to pass the hula hoop around the circle while holding hands. Additionally, they played a game called blind airplane. In this game, students formed groups of three. One group member would close their eyes and would follow the directions of the other two group members, highlighting how crucial communication is. They were encouraged to work with a variety of students, often others who they are unfamiliar with.

More often than not, students perceive a leader as someone who takes charge or a confident speaker and therefore don’t envision themselves as a leader. In this incursion, UPP highlighted that there are different types of leaders: prophet, planner and people. By breaking leadership down into three different categories, students were able to understand that different leaders have different styles and strengths. This understanding helped shift the mindset of students and assisted in building up their confidence to be a leader.

Overall the day was a great success, full of laughter, joy and learning. Here are some reflections from the Year 5 students:

On Friday November 6th, the year 5 students had a google meet with people who taught us about leadership and the three different types of leaders. My favourite part of the leadership day was when we discussed why we are all leaders and which one we were. I learned that leadership is not all about thinking of ideas but it is more about making sure that everyone is included and that it fits everyone's needs. Those are the leaders that people want.

On Friday the Year 5 students had the Year 5 Leadership Day. There were 3 sessions and they were about leading with or without a badge, the epic race and knowing me / growing me. My favourite session was session 2, the epic race. The epic race was about trusting each other. We did a couple of activities like tunnel ball, over and under and blind airplane. My favourite was the blind airplane because I had to trust my partner to not ram me into anything. What I learnt was that no matter who they are you have to trust them.

Last Friday, we had a leadership incursion. We got to do lots of different things to teach us all about leadership.
In the first session we learned that when different animals are trapped, over time they give up on escaping even though that when they get older, they can escape easily. This was meant to teach us that our mind is our only limit. We also learned that whether we have a badge or not, we should still be a leader. Then we had to go with someone that we didn’t really know and we played a game so that we could use our teamwork skills to get the highest score.
In the last session we learned about the three different types of leaders which were the prophet who created the idea, the planner who thinks about what would happen and the people who thinks about others. Then we had to fill a sheet to see what type of leader we were. I found out that I was the planner because I want to finish my work and be prepared. We also played a quiz at the end to see what we learned.
