Season of Advent
This week, student’s have been learning about the Season of Advent - an important part of the Catholic Church’s liturgical calendar.
Throughout our lives, we experience special moments that bring us great happiness and joy.
We really look forward to them, and often mark our calendars as these times get closer;
Christmas is one of these times.
It is a time we spend with family and friends, celebrating the birth of Jesus.
As we count the coming days, think about how the ‘gift of Jesus’ can change us and make us better people.
Think, too, about the gifts we might share with others to show them that we care.
Christmas is worth the wait.”
Catholic Education
RE classes have been learning about Advent and focusing on the key elements of this season, including:
They have been focussing on giving thanks and giving back this Advent. They have created an Advent calendar in the College Office with challenges for staff and students to complete each day of Advent.
Year 8 students have been finishing their last topic of the year - Reconciliation.
In this unit students have explored the human experience and Catholic understanding of sin, forgiveness and reconciliation, focussing on God as a Merciful God. Students have also studied the celebration of the sacraments of Penance and Anointing of the Sick, with specific reference to pastoral care of the sick in the Church, as a continuation of the saving and healing mission of Jesus. This week students have been creating and playing board games to show their understanding of sin and the power of a merciful God, forgiveness and actions that reconcile relationships. Many students followed the style of the traditional “Snakes and Ladders” game to demonstrate this knowledge.
Last term, students learnt about the Catholic Social Teachings and how they guide the decision making and behaviour of Catholics. They looked at current issues in our society including the impact of Covid-19 on people living in Aged Care and the Royal Commission into Aged Care, water allocation, responses to the bushfires as well as other issues important to them.
At the end of Term 3, students composed a letter to Member of Parliament outlining the need for a greater government response regarding one social justice issue.
This week Dr Joe McGirr, Member for Wagga Wagga, visited 10.1 and 10.2 RE classes to respond to student letters and to outline what his Government has done to support local communities following the devastating bushfires over the 2019-2020 summer period.
We thank Dr McGirr for his time.
