Year 7 Maths

Year 7 students completed their final STEM activity

Our Year 7 students completed their final STEM activity in Maths this week. This involved creating a solar BBQ to cook marshmallows. Students were introduced to the concept of a parabola and why it is the basic shape used in satellite dishes. Both light and heat from the sun can be reflected in this shape and this is most effective through the focus of the parabola.

Students then used a parabola to create a solar BBQ, with marshmallows placed on a skewer which passed through the focus of the parabola. Due to the inconsistent weather this week, we had varying degrees of success in actually cooking the marshmallows, but students gained an understanding of how the process works and of the Maths and Science involved in the activity.

A special thanks to Miss Goggin for organising the activity.
