Being a Northcote Student

Last week, we had a distressing incident reported to us by a member of the public. Two junior NHS students were involved in shouting abuse at a passerby, who was doing nothing but walking down a lane near Clauscen St.  It was a upsetting incident  and caused much distress and embarrassment to the school.

It's true that when we read the news and watch TV, at any one time we see the best and worst of people. Fortunately, at Northcote High School its so often the best. This newsletter always carries news on the community and philanthropic work we do - and there is more in this edition. Its been a part of this school's life since it was established in 1926. From small projects like Isabelle Young's annual bake sale fundraiser for a village in remote Borneo, to really large philanthropic projects organised across Year Levels.

This year we also see 40 students travel to Cambodia for three weeks to help two communities. Next year, 35 Music students will bring the joy that only music can to student audiences in remote parts of China.

When we travel to and from school, its important to remember that we need to be the same good citizens. Mindful of other people on public transport, helpful to those in need, polite to people we don't know.

At the end of last term, two NHS students helped a senior citizen who fell while getting onto a tram. They also helped the man off the tram later on. As Australians, and as members of one of the state's oldest secondary schools, one likes to think this is who we are.
