With a uniquely varied student body involved in everything from leadership to the many clubs and societies that add to Nossal's trademark adherence to a love of learning in any field, we felt that for the average student frantically checking emails, scrolling through NEO and reading the newsletter, it can be a bit of a pain to stay on top of the unpredictable Nossal lifestyle. Ladies, gentlemen, welcome to Nossal Student Newsletter.

The student newsletter aims to change that for the better. Keep an eye on this page for all the information on big student events, news from clubs, reminders about important student matters and much more.  We sincerely hope that it aids you in not only surviving your busy student life, but thriving in it too.

Welcome to two of our new writers, Thyda and Leo. :-)

There's a lot to see and do here at Nossal. With all of the tests, assignments and homework tasks, it can sometimes be incredibly difficult for the average student to truly be aware of all the opportunities at their fingertips. This newsletter aims to help you cut through to the information that YOU need. Don't forget to show us how much you like our articles by clicking the ♥ at the bottom of your favourites.

Meet the Writers

Meet a different writer here each issue:

Leo Crnogorcevic

Hello everyone, I’m Leo, a Year 10 student, and one of your writers for the NHS Student News.

It’s a great privilege to directly bring to you, the student body, all the latest school news, and I’m certainly looking forward to doing this over the course of the year!

I’ll be writing a regular column for each Student News issue, where I’ll attempt to take a quite complex and thought-provoking topic, ranging from utilitarianism to ethics behind war to how genetics work, and deliver it to you through an easily-accessible, but nevertheless interesting medium. Being the Co-Chairperson of the Political Society and the captain of the intermediate soccer team, I will also attempt to bring you coverage of some of the other numerous programs in which I am involved with.

My vision is for Nossal students to be aware of what is happening before their very eyes, and to ultimately be knowledgeable, global citizens in a rapidly-advancing world.

If you have any idea which you would like me to discuss, do not hesitate to contact me. I really hope that the Nossal News will get you inspired about journalism and current events!

Intermediate Girls Soccer Tournament

On Monday May 15, Nossal’s Intermediate Girls Soccer Team travelled by bus to Sweeney Reserve to play 3 tournaments against 3 other schools, Hallam, Fountain Gate and Glen Eagles. Spending over 5 weeks of dedicated training with their coaches, Mr. Allen and Diya Redhu, the girls went into the competition with confidence, a positive attitude and enthusiasm.

Their first game was against Glen Eagles where they drew 1-1. After resting for about 20 minutes they played another close game against Hallam where they, sadly, lost 3-2. Their last match against Fountain Gate was brilliant as the girls won 5-0. Nossal’s Intermediates Girls Soccer Team showed great sportsmanship to the 3 other schools and played to the best of their ability. Even though they didn’t make it into the finals, the girls were extremely happy and proud of their achievements and being able to represent Nossal. Congratulations to all the girls who gave the game their best shot and worked well together as a team!

Intermediate Boys Soccer - So close, yet so far …

Featuring a star-studded line-up of excellent talents, including Geethan ‘the Rock’ Balasupramaniam, Enzo ‘Tim 2.0’ Campana and Tim ‘Tim 1.0’ Fung, the Intermediate Boys Football team took to Grices Reserve on Monday, May 22, in an attempt to defend their Casey North division championship.

With this year’s edition of the tournament including a number of absentees, most notably old rival Berwick College, the 9 entrants were split up into two groups. The Nossal boys were drawn with what was considered a relatively easy pool, alongside Pakenham, Timbarra and Gleneagles ‘B’, whilst the other pool, dubbed the ‘group of death’ included matchups between Gleneagles ‘A’, Hallam, Kambrya, Fountain Gate and St Thomas Aquinas.

Kicking-off the day against a weaker Pakenham side, Nossal surged forward time after time – but failed to convert numerous chances – a possible by-product of rushing caused by playing times that were 7-minute halves. Vice-captain Jazeb eventually settled the nerves, with Timmy, Leo and Hassan (2 goals) all hitting the back of the net to give the boys from Clyde Road a solid 5-0 victory.

Three points already on the board, Nossal, under the leadership of Sam ‘Guardiola’ Allen, geared up to play what would be their toughest opponents in the group stage, Gleneagles ‘B’. Despite dominating the majority of the game, Chamika’s solitary goal, assisted by Leo, was not enough to prevail over a defiant Gleneagles team who, after capitalising on some defensive mistakes by Nossal, equalised to earn themselves a 1-1 draw.

With both Gleneagles B and Nossal on 4 points each going into the final round of group matches, the side knew that the next game was do-or-die. Gleneagles B smashing Pakenham meant that goal difference would be the deciding factor as Nossal faced Timbarra P-9. Knowing that they had to match or beat Gleneagle’s record, Nossal were only up by 2 at the conclusion of the first half, which meant they had to score at least 4 goals in 8 minutes – a seemingly impossible task. But Nossal is known for commitment, and the boys, spurred on by a spirited performance by skipper Leo managed to actually do it, winning scoring the 6th with a matter of seconds to go.

Subject to a hostile crowd throughout the match, Nossal nevertheless managed to do it; however, a situation which no-one was prepared for arose: Nossal’s and Gleneagle’s records were exactly identical. A tense penalty shoot-out, where ‘keeper Arzan was the hero, ensured that Nossal would play against the winner of group A for the title – who just so happened to be Gleneagles’ A team.

Quite tired already, the boys went 1-0 down at half time. Chasing the game, Leo managed to score the equaliser and send the game to (another) penalty shoot-out. This time, however, luck was not on our boys’ side, the Gleneagle's goalkeeper making two magnificent saves to give them the win, and a spot in Regional Finals next term.

Although certainly bitter following the defeat, the boys know that all their training and dedication will still be an advantage to them, as their Selective Cup ties against Melbourne and Suzanne Cory High Schools now await them on July 28.

The Explainer - Complex things "Un-boring-ed" with Leo

2017/18 Federal Budget

AH, IT’S THAT time of the year again –  May! Winter is slowly taking its hold; all-important SACs are happening … and the Federal Budget is being revealed! You may be confused about the Budget or think that it is really boring and unimportant, but in this article, I’ll aim to explain some of the things behind the ‘big B’ and the way it will affect you personally in the future.

SO WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?

Each year, on the second Tuesday of May, the Treasurer stands up in Parliament in Canberra and gives a big speech about what the Government is planning to spend over the next financial year and how they will raise that money. Put simply, the Budget is like a big shopping list of all the things the Government wants. Although the Treasurer may outline a number of things that he wants to happen, this does not necessarily mean that it will actually happen. After much debate, between politicians and further public debate, the Parliament decides whether to approve the Government’s wish list.

Like the last budget, the Government may have a hard time getting the budget past the Senate – the Upper House of Parliament. This is because many Senators are members of minor parties, whose views and political stances on every single issue are often unknown.

WHY SHOULD I CARE?

Politics may seem really uninteresting at times, with politicians almost seeming to speaking another language, however, it is very important that you at least get informed about what is being discussed. Being an engaged citizen is very important to the progress of our country, especially with Nossal shaping us to be the leaders of tomorrow.

Being aware of what’s happening is easy and can include things like enrolling to vote when you turn 18, watching the news once a week, or even discussing your thoughts with others. (Joining the Political Society at Nossal is another good idea.)

The Budget contains some of the most important decisions that will affect us in the future, so knowing what they are is vital.

ALRIGHT THEN LEO, WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

Well, your thoughts on the Budget will of course depend on your own political views and the experiences you’ve had in the past.

However, that being said, the biggest issue that concerns students is:

Rising uni fees.  The Government wants to cut funding to universities, which will mean that they will charge more for admission. The Government has also said that they will change how the HECS-HELP system of repaying student loans will work. Basically, they will make you pay more of your loans back faster, with you having to start paying money back when you start earning $42,000, a number which has been lowered.

The Government has said that this will make universities more efficient and competitive, whilst the Opposition has said that this is just another way that the Government is ripping young people off.

Thank you for reading complex things "un-boring-ed" with Leo; join us next time as we dissect another big topic in a small way.
