Plain English Speaking Awards 2017
Exhilarating, thought provoking and interesting are just the necessary words to describe the Plain English Speaking Awards for 2017. Nossal hosted it once again this year and no doubt it held up it's end of the bargain and did not disappoint.
Hayden Radford and Cree Oliveria-Blackett were among the Nossal competitors and Cree ended up winning with the brilliant execution of her prepared and impromptu speeches. Among the topics covered, gender discrimination, female empowerment and if the 'best things in life are free' were common themes. It was interesting to see the different approaches to the same prompt and interpretation of happiness, whether it was financial or emotional wealth. However, this wasn't just a competition to see who could do public speaking the best rather it was to share intellectual thoughts and have intelligent conversations about current day topics that impact our generation very heavily.
The Nossal Debating Students engaged actively by participating in being the MC, timekeeper and most of all great audience throughout the day. To the delight of most, the catering for the recess break was a reward for all the effort put in to make PESA a successful event. On behalf of all the students, I would like to thank the teachers who were involved with making it a spectacular experience and I am greatly looking forward to next year. Until then, Adios Amigos.

Nossal students are taking a lead in a major community project
Two teams of Nossal High School students have chosen to support a very worthy cause by committing their talents and abilities while raising funds for Kids Cancer Project.
The students involved are in two teams and have accepted the challenge to "write-a book -in-a-day". Training has already begun with the students receiving coaching from Nossal staff members as well as recognised author and friend of Nossal High School, Archie Fursillo. The "WABIAD" challenge will held on Tuesday 8 August with students commencing their their task at 8:00am and working through until 8:00pm. The final outcome of the day will be that the books written by our students will be published along with all others from the program and distributed to students being treated for cancer in hospitals throughout Australia.
But while the 17 students are heavily committed to writing their books on the day, they are also looking for the additional support of the wider school community by attendance at a special Dinner Dance to be held in the Nossal High School Auditorium on Friday 4 August. Tickets are just $40.00 and include a sumptuous three course meal provided by our sponsor V. Mistry and Sons with music provided by another sponsor, DJ Baba. This event promises to be a grand event, and the Nossal High School WABIAD team are looking for your support.
Bookings close soon, so please hurry and reserve your seat or better still get your table group together now. Tickets can be made at https://www. trybooki ng.com/PNGS or over the phone at the school office on 8762 4600.
The Nossal High School Team would love to receive your support. All proceeds raised through the evening will be donated to Kids cancer project. Book today!

Our trusting environment is under threat
One of the great features of Nossal High School, is the level of trust and respect people have between each other as members of the school community. As leaders, even though we regularly encourage students to lock their lockers, we are also proud when we take guests through our school and they comment on the honesty and confidence that is evident in the unlocked lockers along the corridors and in rooms. However then a situation occurs which undoes some of that great feeling and stops us all with a jolt and such an occasion happened last week.
A senior student came to me and reported he had lost his laptop. He had left it in a room in Learning Area 2 at the end of period 4 and when he returned at the end of lunchtime, it had vanished. A notice appeared on NEO for a few days asking people to keep an eye out for the machine, but by the end of the week, it had still not been found.
A laptop computer cannot simply vanish. The one in question has not been handed in to the office nor the ICT Office. Our cleaners regularly bring things to Reception that they find lying around the school, but in this case, nothing.
I am therefore asking two things:
1. Could everyone please keep a look out for a missing Lenovo laptop computer. It is obviously an important piece of equipment and one that the student in question needs to get back for his learning to be able to continue effectively. If anyone locates the device or knows where it is, please return it to either Reception or the ICT Office.
2. The second thing is to again ask students to be diligent with their property, Please lock your personal items in your locker when they are not in use. There is nothing such as a school insurance policy to cover personal property. Anything brought to school is at the owner's risk so please ensure the safety of your property and leave it in a secure locker.
