Excursions
Australian War Memorial
On Wednesday March 28, the Year 11 Modern History class travelled to Canberra to tour the Australian War Memorial as part of their study of World War I. Students had the pleasure of going on a guided tour of the Memorial focusing on some of the most significant events and people. A highlight of the tour for students was the discussion around Monash and his planning for the battle of Hamel, the contribution of nurses and medical staff to the war effort and the role C.E.W. Bean played in developing the Memorial. Some students took time to research relatives who fought in a war, with several looking in to World War II. This trip will form the basis for students to construct their own exhibit on World War I, with a focus on allowing students to create either a physical, written or digital exhibit on any aspect of the war.
Japanese Excursion
On March 28 the Japan Foundation and representatives of the Consulate-General of Japan visited Orange High School and organised several different activities that engaged students in authentic Japanese culture. Cowra High School was lucky enough to be invited to join in on the celebration of Japanese culture.
Our students were first treated to a cinematic viewing of a Japanese animated film, titled「サマーウォーズ」 “Summer Wars”. A tear was shed by many at the sad turn of events in the film.
Students were then treated to a「書道」shodou calligraphy masterclass. Using kanji, complicated Japanese characters that are similar to Chinese characters, students demonstrated their newfound ability in this ancient art form. Some of the characters written by our students were 物 mono (thing), 花 hana (flower), 緑 midori(green) and many other ones. Representatives from the Consulate-General of Japan even described the characters our student's drew as "magnificent"! Well done Cowra!
The students of Cowra High School who came on the excursion were exemplary, demonstrating our key values of respect and responsibility at every moment. They were fine ambassadors for, not only our school in the wider Central-West community, but as Australian language learning students for two of the most prominent organisations that promote Australia-Japanese relations.
