STUDENT ACTIVITIES
ABDI ADEN
Every now and then we come across an inspiring human being who sparks an idea that you want to pursue. Well, the year 8 cohort and I were privileged enough to meet Abdi Aden and to listen and take in all of his opinions, perspectives and then to discover our personal thoughts about this big wide world that we are living in. He shared stories and gave us morals and life lessons that will help us to become a person that we are happy with.
Abdi had an impact on all the students that witnessed his thrilling and important tales of courage and bravery. I personally was enthralled to hear these tales of passion and survival. After the talk Abdi was able to stay and chat to anyone who wanted to find out more. Amelia and I talked and asked questions about his past life and how he travelled. We talked about the attitudes and the thoughts that would be helpful later on in life and he expressed his true feelings towards discrimination.
I just want to thank Abdi Aden for his time and for all of his thoughts and ideas and his passion that will push us to become better people.

MESC - MY KITCHEN RULES
This year MESC MKR had 14 students participate. The students worked in pairs to create a two course meal for lunch on Friday the 9th of November. During period 3 and 4 (11:15am to 1:15pm) the students prepared their dishes so as to have them ready for judging at 1:15pm. The students were required to plate six mains and six desserts with their partner. Whilst the dishes were being assessed and graded, the students sat down to dine on their creations with a staff member that they had invited along to share the meal with them.
The judges were Shenae Greig, Poppy Rich and Callum Mann. Shenae completed Year 12 Food Studies in 2017 and is moving onto William Angliss Institute to complete a certificate in Patisserie next Year. Poppy was successful in winning MESC MKR last year. Poppy and Callum are both part of the school leadership team.
After much tasting and sensory analysis the judges tallied their scores and a very close finish was announced. Milly Verhagen and Louise Henley were the overall winners of MESC MKR 2018 with their Veggie Burger & Sweet Potato Chips for main and Baked Peach with Strawberry Puree for dessert. The judges said that everyone did a fantastic job and that the main area for improvement was refining their ‘plating-up’ skills. Congratulations to Milly and Louise and to all the students who participated.
