We recently had a short talk on anxiety in children. Some important points were:
1. A certain level of anxiety is normal and part of everyday life
2. When children experience new phases in their lives such as starting prep, starting Year 7 or starting at a new school - they learn life-long skills to help them cope with the normal anxiety experienced when we start a new job or are in a new situation as adults
3. It is important to keep things in perspective - We can't always control things that happen in life but we can control how we react or think about these events
4. Talking to children and giving them strategies to deal with situations is better than letting them avoid situations that they are worried about
5. Seek help if anxiety is impacting on the ability to participate in everyday activities
The Kidsmatter website has a number of resources for parents to help if their child is suffering from anxiety.
Parents/adults should also seek help if they are experiencing anxiety by talking to someone or going to a GP
The Crochet and Origami Clubs are going well. Thank you to our wonderful Origami helpers, particularly Ben Dixon and Ibby Taleb for organising the projects each week and teaching each group. The whales were a success and I look forward to learning how to make a 'frog' over the next few weeks.
The Crochet club is also going well, with the children crocheting lots of chain bracelets and necklaces. If anyone has any spare wool they could donate we would be very grateful.
