Opportunities for all year groups

Year 12 2017 experience a Careers Expo held right here at Cecil Hills High School, organised by Mrs Reid - Careers Adviser

Careers Corner

Each year our aim is to improve our (Cecil Hills High School) Careers services and programs to

enhance the career development experiences of our students. During 2017 students in Years 9-12 developed their skills to inquire, explore, and gather relevant information to make informative career decisions. Our students developed awareness of the link between education and work and the role of lifelong learning, understanding that people’s skills are built up over time because of learning and experience.

The following opportunities and programs provided direction to developing a growth mindset. Authentic and engaging workshops, presentations, career tools and expos were delivered to assist our students to discover their strengths and develop their skills for work.

Year 7 Aim Higher

The Year 7 Aim Higher Theatre in Schools production supported the idea of staying in learning post-school is fun, interesting and obtainable. The characters explored different routes and pathways through education, including HSC, TAFE and University and other career options to promote and to develop an understanding of post school pathway terminology and earlier reflection.

Year 9 Student Pathways

Year 9 STW Student Pathways Survey, ‘Discover Me’ day, Taste of Trades and Careers ExpoStudents were provided with experiences to develop their transferable skills in research, goal setting, evaluating options and reaching decisions.  Students became aware that their career development will be a lifelong process that involves constant growth, change and adaptation.

WSU Steps

Year 9 and 10 Western Sydney University (WSU) STEPS Strive Towards Educational Participation and Success program, Year 10 ‘Which way now?’ subject selection workshops

There was a true sense of excitement surrounding our students as they engaged in various activities during the STEPS@ Western Sydney University program which helped them explore their career strengths, interests and options and life at a University.

The ‘Which way now program’ aimed to help our Year 10 students think about the next two years and beyond and provided research and reflective activities so that they could make the best decisions for successful study.

Mandatory work experience

Year 10 Mandatory Work Experience Program - 185 students recently discovered the benefits of participating in work experience, how to source work experience opportunities and the Department of Education Mandatory procedures for undertaking work experience.

This valuable program provided each student with experience in the world of work, to evaluate their own strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, abilities and interests, improved their knowledge of the range of specific occupation factors; practise and develop employment life and employability skills and in some cases gain part-time employment and greater consideration towards entry into TAFE/University courses or Traineeships, Cadetships and Apprenticeships.

Western Sydney University

Year 11 students were provided with a tangible sense of what their university experience might look and feel like during Western Sydney University Day. Our students attended interactive workshops, lectures, displays and demonstrations in their areas of interest and explored their career options and pathways.

Year 11 and Year 12

Year 12 Future in Focus day - Year 11 and 12  Health Expo - students engaged in various career workshops and gained valuable information and guidance from various higher education representatives on alternative and early entry pathways into University and from TAFE to University. Students’ researched courses of interest, asked questions, collected information and were linked to post school education organisations that provided them with training, scholarship and early entry information

External Vocational Education

In 2017, a total of fifty one senior students participated in EVET External Vocational Education courses as part of their HSC course of study .Three students undertook a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship in both Plumbing and Retail.

Useful websites

There’s just so much careers information in the public domain, but it’s not always easy to find, particularly when students only want the immediate answer to a specific occupation, HSC, ATAR, Tertiary education, or transition related question. Cecil Hills High School has subscribed to two useful career websites and a Facebook page accessible to you and your child. Both websites provide a student- friendly platform, intuitively navigable, an up-to-date and comprehensive directory of career information and resources.

REMEMBER TO:

Our Careers and Transition team will continue to aim to improve all students’ capacity to have a successful transition to further education and training and/or employment.
