What happens at a Careers Expo?

At a Careers Expo many tertiary institutions (universities, TAFES, training college) including employment, apprenticeship, internship, and training providers are present. You have the opportunity to talk to tertiary staff about what certain courses are actually like, what the entry requirements are for those courses, pathways into courses, and speak with apprenticeship/traineeship employers about the best way to enter particular industries.  The Careers Expo also offers seminars on various topics that you can book and attend.

Who should attend a Careers Expo?

Anyone who is considering studying at a tertiary level and or obtaining an apprenticeship/traineeship in the next few years should attend.

Why should you attend a Careers Expo?

There are many other reasons why attending a Careers Expo is a good idea:

What is really involved in the course or courses you are interested in?  What kind of units (subjects) will you study?  What majors/minors are on offer within the course you are considering?

  • What scholarships does the institution offer/application dates?
  • What alternative pathways of getting into your course of choice?
  • If you have to move away from home, where are you going to live?
  • What accommodation facilities are available at the institution where you are considering studying?
  • What student services/clubs does the provider offer?
  • How do they transition first-year students into tertiary life?
  • What are the graduate outcomes?
  • What types of jobs have graduates obtained upon completion of the course you are considering?
  • What are employers looking for when hiring apprentices/trainees?
  • What are the minimum requirements?
  • What do you need to do to enter the Defence Force?
  • Will you be happier studying in a large metropolitan institution or a smaller, perhaps rural institution?
  • How are you going to get there? Is it close to public transport or should you start saving now for a car?

If you don’t know the answers to any of these questions, then you should attend a Careers Expo!

How to make the best of a Career Expo

To make your Career Expo visit fun and informative, here are some pointers:

  • Write down a list of questions you would like to ask about particular courses/careers
  • Be there early. Crowds tend to develop as the day progresses
  • Download venue map, list of exhibitors & seminars available from above web address so that you can plan your visit
  • Ask lots of questions!
  • Don’t spend the day collecting printed information only. Use the opportunity to speak directly with staff/employers
  • Enjoy the Expo!
