College musical - Tickets now on sale

We are very excited to inform our community that the College musical of The Little Mermaid will be performed in the first week of next term. The changes to COVID-19 restrictions for schools for Term 2 means we are able to host the performances at a 75% capacity in Roncalli Hall. For those unsure of the storyline, The Little Mermaid is about Ariel, King Triton's youngest daughter, who wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colourful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.

DATE AND TIME

26 April 7pm | 27 April 7pm | 28 April 7pm | 29 April 7pm | 30 April 2pm & 7pm

Sustainability News

Over the last 12 months the students in Sustainability Club and some Year 10 Science classes have been involved in germinating and growing a variety of native seedlings. With the help from an education officer from The Trillion Trees organisation,  we have germinated and grown over 200 native seedlings which are mix of marri, banksias, acacias, callistemons, kangaroo paws and native hibiscus species.

On Wednesday after school this week, some members of the Sustainability Club helped with the planting of some of these seedlings. Over the last year we have planted over 100 trees and shrubs on the western side of the College.

The aim of these plantings is to help to provided food and shelter for the local fauna particularly the endangered Carnaby Cockatoo. The birds visit and feed in the College grounds quite frequently.

We will be holding a Saturday morning community planting event next term on 7 May where students, parents and staff will be invited to assist with this exciting mass tree-planting exercise. This project is part of the IBVM Bicentenary Jubilee Celebration Ecology Project.

As part of our jubilee, we will invite each province to undertake an environmental project, something significant that will witness to our care of creation

Japanese students perfect their skills

During Term 1, our students in Year 9 Japanese learnt a new script called katakana. This script is used to write words that Japanese borrow from other languages. A few of our students mastered the script so created their own picture dictionary in the new script. Here is a sample of Bianca Petsos’ beautifully illustrated Katakana Pictionary.

On Tuesdays after school our Year 12 students studying Japanese attend 'Kaiwa Club' where they practice speaking perfect Japanese with Japanese native speakers. Keep up the hard work Year 12! Ganbatte!

Don’t say Happy Easter with slavery!

1.56 million children work for us to eat chocolate. Modern slavery & illegal child labour are hidden ingredients in most of the world’s chocolate. Purchase slavery free chocolate by looking out for the following logos - Fairtrade, UTZ or Rainforest Alliance.

STEM Drone & Dungeons & Dragons Clubs

STEM Drone Club will recommence on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30pm, starting Week 2. No experience is necessary and everyone is welcome. If you have your own drone you can bring it along, otherwise we have small drones for you to use.

Dungeons & Dragons will also start up again in Week 2 of Term 2. The adventure with Tom Hill (Year 8) as Dungeon Master is on Monday afternoons, and there are still some spaces left with him if you would like to join. My Year 7 clan will also recommence on Thursday afternoon. After defeating Karh the Bugbear, our band of fearless adventurers are off to find Gundren Rockseeker.

SPORT

With the term break now upon us, its important to reflect on all the sporting achievements our students managed to accomplish in yet another modified environment. All swimming and cross-country training took place, adhering to all restrictions where our students continued to participate with their usual spirit for sport. Despite Summer NAS being postponed for Term 1, many teams (especially seniors) endeavoured to train throughout the term, not only for game preparation, but to provide an opportunity to keep active and boost their mental wellbeing in these uncertain times.

We managed to run an Interhouse Swimming Carnival, giving each House’s competitive swimmers the chance to shine in the pool. Congratulations again must go to Ward House for taking our Sr Mary Murray Cup! Our elite swimmers then had the opportunity to compete in the ACC Swimming Age Championships, where our students took on the best of the best of all 85 catholic schools to come home with the Overall Aggregate Champion Girls Shield and third place Overall Aggregate Shield.

As always, thank you to all our coaches for their tireless efforts providing our students with the opportunities to get involved in sport. Another enormous thank you must go to our wonderful parents for their support with early morning drop off and late afternoon pickups. Our training programs would not be as successful as they are without this commitment and dedication.

Next term, our sites will focus on cross-country and our Winter NAS Program.

Interhouse Cross-Country Carnival

Our Interhouse Cross-Country Carnival is set to go ahead next term on Friday 29 April. The format will be modified to adhere to COVID restrictions, however the day will still provide wonderful opportunity for our students to gather as a year group.

  • All year groups will run in an allocated period on the day.
  • Points will be awarded to each House's top three runners to compete towards the Fr Gaetan Pereira Cup. A runner’s individual place will equal the number of points. The House with the lowest total number of points will be the overall champion.

Congratulations

Over the last week the Chemist Warehouse Australian Track and Field Championships took place for junior athletes. We had two students from John XXIII compete against the best of the best in Sydney in some very trying conditions.

A massive congratulations to Sasha Pallis who competed in the U/14 Girls 800m and 1500m and to Leila Barker who competed in U/17 Girls Pole Vault . They both had fantastic results with Sasha Pallis finishing 8th in Australia for her 800m and 13th in her 1500m. In the U/17 Pole Vault Leila took out the national title with a clearance of 3.45m. Well done on the 21/22 season.

Also congratulations to Lucas Preston, Year 10, for making the 2022 East Fremantle FC Futures squad.
