Athletics  & Boys Netball with Claire Blower

Athletics

We had a brilliant day for Athletics on Monday. The sun was shining and our students were raring to go out and achieve some good results. The students seemed to all be in great spirits and really enjoying their day.

Some highlights for the day were Amilia Portelli (year 7) miles in front of the pack in her 800m effort achieving a first.  Hudson Bennet (year 7) running his heart out in his 1500m and never giving up and working hard to make sure that the long jump pit Woodmans Hill were responsible for was in prime condition for all competitors - never seen a flatter pit of sand!

James Burton (Year 9) returning from his discus event letting me know that he was SO IMPRESSED by a Ballarat High guy throwing a discus 47m….before he told me his own results.

Hayden Molenkamp (Year 11) had wins outside his events, being a wonderful role model to our younger students and displaying all of our Woodmans Hill values throughout the day!  It was a really positive experience for all teachers and students alike and we will have some students advancing to the next round.

Boys Netball

Next for the week we had Boys Netball which saw Woodmans Hill take out an intermediate and junior side.

The junior team only had one game for the day, against Daylesford.  Now there must be something in the water in Daylesford as their year 7’s looked a lot like grown men, but that is a story for another time.  Unfortunately, we did not come up with the chocolates in this game - the score line is irrelevant - we saw some absolutely amazing game play! Nic Wilkie (year 7) was spectacular in defence, he looked like he had been playing netball for years. Cooper Nagorcka was in centre and he never gave up and continued to run out the game, always keeping a positive mindset. The boys really showed a lot of resilience and stayed together as a team no matter what which is great! The boys then had a game “for fun” against the Daylesford team again and they all came away with red faces and smiles.

The intermediate boys went into the day with high hopes, coach Gus Prenc (year 9), folder and pen in hand, had the boys up and about and ready for a big day of wins.  Our first game was against Phoenix, we were pretty competitive and it came down to a 3 point loss. We saw some super goal keeping from Isaac Marshall (Year 9) on someone a head and shoulders taller than him.  We then played every schools rivals - Ballarat High - this saw a bit of a change up of our starting line-up and we saw Lincoln Sage (year 10) pop in to goal attack, he had a great start and gave it his all. Jett Johnston (Year 9) was doing it all in attack and we saw Aiden Hill (Year 9) play some strong defence in the second half. Unfortunately, we didn’t quite get the win in that game either. Our third and final game saw us play Daylesford. Slightly injured by previous losses, the boys decided that this game would be “for fun”. The Daylesford boys team had at least two 7 foot tall students, so the boys decided Gus Gaulke (Year 10) would be our best option in Goal Keeper and Oscar Goodrick (Year 9) in Goal Defence. Oscar and Gus combined as a great defensive team, Oscar playing tenaciously, accidentally contacting nearly every time he went near the ball - I think the Daylesford boys were scared of him, solid tactics. Again, a loss, however the boys seemed to have a great day and they were excited to return back to school to talk about the positives of the day!
