President's Report

President's Report from ISQua's AGM on 21st October 2019

The President reported that her aim continues to be that of ensuring that the governance of ISQua is sound and effectively enabling ISQua to progress; to achieve the mission and vision. Following up on the Board retreat of March 2018 a second retreat was held in March 2019 with continued work on developing our evaluation strategy and follow-through on previous actions.  The President conducted 1:1 interviews with the Board and Honorary Advisor Members. The first Board annual evaluation results utilising the new process recorded that areas for improvement included Board orientation and the utilisation of the skills and expertise of Board members.

 

In all other aspects, the Board is functioning well.  A policy and procedure to evaluate each Board meeting was completed and is being applied.  The Board compact has been refined. The Board have also been reviewing policies including travel, honoraria, and have consolidated the Board advisory committees.

 

ISQua is grateful to the Irish Department of Health for their financial contribution. This support is important to the stability of the organisation and ISQua is committed to maintaining a positive relationship of sharing international knowledge and expertise in Ireland.

 

Sincere thanks were expressed to David Bates for proposing and becoming the first Lead of the ISQua Academy of Quality and Safety in Healthcare (IAQS). To date, there are a total of 55 Academy members.

The Lucian Leape Patient Safety Fellowship was launched in January 2019. The first Fellow is Dr Subhro Bhomwick from India.

 

The Board members who were standing down, Yuichi Imanaka, Leslee Thompson, Peter Carter and Cliff Hughes were thanked for their contribution to ISQua. Their commitment and valuable input were important to the progress of ISQua.

The President welcomed the newly elected Board members Salma Jaouni, Ellen Joan van Vliet, Tricia Woodhead and Ezequiel Elorrio Garcia. The results of the Board election increase the diversity of the Board in that we now have Board members from all regions of the world as defined by the WHO.

 

Thanks were extended to the outgoing Past President, Cliff Hughes, and President-Elect, Jeffrey Braithwaite, for their immense contribution, invaluable wisdom and expertise.

 

The President expressed her thanks on behalf of the Board for the work of Peter Lachman and the ISQua staff who work diligently to action our strategy and strengthen our contribution to improving the quality of healthcare globally.  

 

CEO Report

The CEO, Peter Lachman, reported on the following achievements:

  • The highest number of Members recorded since 2009 and an increase in Individual Members in all regions.
  • 18 new Institutional Members from each WHO region.
  • Increased profile with the WHO including ISQua’s involvement with the inaugural meeting for the Africa Patient Safety Initiative.
  • The Board now represents all WHO regions spreading the reach of the Society.
  • The launch of the Academy has attracted leading names in the field to be members.
  • The appointment of the new Editor-in-Chief who is a renowned researcher. 
  • The highest number of active Fellows since the inception of the programme.
  • Joint Fellowship programmes in development in Latin America (in Spanish), Taiwan and Brazil.
  • The ISQua Mentoring Programme was redesigned and relaunched with great support from ISQua Experts.
  • An increase in the reach of the International Accreditation Programme.

 

The CEO thanked outgoing Board members Yuichi, Leslee, Peter and Cliff. Special thanks were expressed to the Officers, Wendy Nicklin, Cliff Hughes and Jeffrey Braithwaite for their support.
